Saints Row The Third, Red Faction freezing/ loading infinitely

An oddly specific issue, I think all 3 of these games (SR3, Guerilla, and Armageddon) run on the same engine. SR3 and Guerilla used to run fine, but having the battery in caused extreme framerate drops, so now the laptop is on AC power. But now they won't make it past the menu screen in DX11. The game will freeze at the menu, and I have to end the program. In DX9 mode, the game will make it past the menu, but in Saints Row's case, runs terribly, and in Armageddon's case, loads infinitely. Forcing DX9 in launch options doesn't seem to have made a difference. I updated Windows, that didn't make a difference either. Video drivers are up to date. Have tried reinstalling, no difference. Verifying cache somehow finds missing files every time, and even tried to redownload 80% of the entire game.

They do run on the same engine. Guerilla I think needs a 3rd party mod to run correctly on Windows 7. SR3 shouldn't have a problem.

Have you tried any other games that don't use Volition's engine?

try installing direct x again? use websetup to make sure you have all the files.

It says I have the latest version of DirectX, so can't install any more.

It's only a problem for these games. Everything else is working fine.

There is a steam patch for this, i have checked my computer and found a random folder called red faction steam patch, as i remember the frustration quite well. just called msredfactionpatch and has a yingyang icon, no idea where i got it from.

Given that this is from the Steam forums, THQ obviously didn't care. I can't say I want to see them fail, but a less than half arsed port onto PC is pretty damning.
