Sapphire R9 390 Issue - Please Advise

Hello everyone

Just bought a new Sapphire R9 390 Nitro and installed the crimson 16.1 driver. I am having an issue regarding my GPU load which fluctuates randomly between 60% - 99 % when on idle (windows running only). Please advise what could be the reasons behind this abnormal behavior. Also the idle temperature i get is around 50-53'C with Fan 25-30%, is that normal ?

Well, your saying this is idle but according to the charts the GPU is under load which 53c is pretty good for under load temperature wise at 30% speed.

Your saying though the GPU is under load when idle? So something is using your GPU on the desktop because the GPU should not be randomly under load just sitting at the desktop. Can you check what processes are open on your machine?

There is definitely something using the GPU. You can try using a program called GPUShark to see what processes are using your GPU.

Oh, sorry, you have to switch GPUShark to Detailed Mode to see what is using the GPU.

View->Detailed Mode

If you are already in detailed mode, then GPUShark might not show the running processes with your GPU.

That cannot be the driver using it because the GPU just staying at its highest clocks could be associated with it but not the load. At that load, I feel something on your system is eating it up since most of what your showing falls in general line with the GPU being under a game load.

You have some process running that's eating it unfortunately, you may even have a virus of some sort.

Just quick guess but the browser is probably what's loading the graphic card.
I see that on certain pages
Kill all the browser process's and watch if it return's to idle

I have that exact card and mine is idling at 47C with 27% fan speed. Maybe there is a reporting error with
GPU load but it's more likely still something using the GPU.

Close everything except GPU-Z and see if the GPU is clocking up with load still. This almost feels like GPGPU. The list of processes running on the OP's machine doesn't seem to include anti-virus. Perhaps a mining Trojan infected the OP's machine on the UAC (Administrator,) account?

Simply put, the 390 should never go to full clocks when not doing GPGPU or any 3D work. Even playing back 4k video barely makes my 390 flinch.

its not the browser either. During full load (starwars battlefront maxed out) my GPU temperature keeps a healthy 57-59c figure .. but that GPU load figure bothers me ! a faulty sensor maybe ?

Looks like a bitcoin mining virus. Download and install malwarebytes and run it. Failing that, run a standard AV scan.

...or re-install Windows while using AV going forward. It doesn't look like the OP has much installed so it might not be a tall order.

Thanks for the replies ! i ran the malwarebytes scan but quarantining certain detected elements did not stop the GPU load ! BUT one major find is that if i disconnect internet, the GPU load comes back to normal (0%) and idle temp gets better as well (~42%) .. what does that indicate? please advise

Sounds like you've got some variant of a bitcoin miner, since disconnecting the net solves it. You can probably find it in your startup entries in MSCONFIG

Your machine is being used to mine bitcoin. Bitcoins can't be mined without an internet connection. Run an AV scan if malwarebytes hasn't picked anything up. As @Mussels said, check "Startup" items in msconfig.

If whatever AV/Malware scan you're using isn't picking anything up, then you should just nuke your PC and do a fresh install of Windows. Don't install crap you don't need. You may have potentially downloaded and installed software that came packaged with it from an unscrupulous source.

Yup definitely something dodgy using your GPU as when disconnected from the web theres no way for whatever it is to communicate hence it not using your GPU, personally I'd be more inclined to do a clean install rather than try and get rid of it if you don't know where it came from, some really shit people in the world SMH

Yep, that is definitely a mining program using your machine. You need to do exactly like @Mussels said and run an AV scan or try and find it in startup items.

If your stuck and cannot solve it, your going to have to do a fresh install of windows to fix it (meaning complete format).

It's not just nefarious software, remember when certain versions of utorrent and winzip had malware. Though yes this sort of stuff usually comes from installing crap software or forgetting to un select some option in the installer.

Just for your information, if you want to know which process uses your GPU and how much does each process/application uses your VRAM you can download Process Explorer : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx

Run it and enable GPU monitoring via : View > Select Columns > choose "Process GPU" tab and tick all the boxes.

Then you can see your GPU usage & VRAM usage in detail like this :

I would re-install Windows to make sure there isn't anything that's more malicious, like a key logger. Also stop uploading screenshots with all this white space, it's rather annoying. Just do a window snip using Snipping Tool.
