I recently picked up a VIZIO smart TV was wondering if there is anyway to stream video files from the local host server of some kind?

Im not to sure if you have figured this out yet but maybe give this a shot. Download this to your pc http://serviio.org/download and then through your tv's DLNA search for Serviio and stream videos from your pc to your smart tv.

What operating system is the server running? If it is Windows Server 2008 or newer, it has a built in share/DLNA function. It might just need some files Microsoft provides.

I appreciate your answer may be sorted, but I may bring my dumb Lehman approach to this? Our Samsung smart TV has Samsung AllShare. We install AllShare on our host PC, it automatically scans in designated folders that may have media in them, and then when we load AllShare on the TV, it shows us the folders and allows us to browse and play ANY media inside them.

Does VIZIO have its own version of this, perchance?

There was a HUGE update came out for the TV so I left it running over night, and here is a list of what I can install:

Multimedia
vudu
amazon
MGO
Flickr
Hotlist webvideos
Crackle
FlixFling
Revision3
Plex
YUPPTV
hungama movies

I can run anything from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2
and I am not 100% what OS the TV is running atm.

on top of that, also seems like if i plug stuff in and use Multimedia option it's lacking the codec and ability to run AVI and KVM files.
