with 7800x3d you don't need DLSS for 1080p/1440p gaming though, x3d cache seems to boost this game enough to really make it quite smooth for most people" I expect with maybe one or two settings turned down to High instead of Epic, I will be able to manage 165 fps, 165hz at 1440p consistently with my current rig. no fsr/DLSS needed really until you hit 4k - so I guess I am not too sad about not having DLSS 3 after all

This doesn't work that way. For a fast CPU to give you advantage you need a fast enough GPU as well. Also, DLSS doesn't improve FPS when you're CPU bottlenecked so if you have a weaker CPU, enabling DLSS won't give you extra perforance. So the reality is that to play without DLSS you need top GPU, not CPU. But at the same time you need top CPU to play at high FPS, regardless if DLSS is enabled or not.

x3d cache changes the way it works.

if you look at 7800x3d review at pcgamer where they test it with a RTX 3080, you will see similar gains as the 4090 here, x3d changes the way cpu's are tested.

some games just love x3d cache.

you can't use that old way of testing anymore.

if you look at 7800x3d review at pcgamer where they test it with a RTX 3080, you will see similar gains as the 4090 here, x3d changes the way cpu's are tested
This only means that in both reviews there wasn't any significant GPU bottleneck if gains are similar (yes, it's still possible to test CPUs with the 3080 in 2024, just don't kill it with resolution).
some games just love x3d cache.
They do... but in CPU bottleneck scenario only.

It's 2024 and people still don't understand how bottlenecks work... To play at high FPS you need two things:
a) CPU that is powerful enough to display your target FPS (DLSS/FSR doesn't help at all with that)
b) GPU that is powerful enough to display your target FPS at your target resolution and details (this is where DLSS/FSR does help a lot)
So while the 7800X3D is mighty powerful in games that take advantage of 3D Cache, you won't see that advantage if your GPU is too weak or you put too much stress on your GPU (too high resolution, too much RT, whatever). That's how things always worked and that's how they still work in 2024. Depending on how powerful your GPU is, you may still need to enable DLSS or lower details for weaker GPUs to reach your target FPS, even if you have the 7800X3D in your PC.

Your logic is sound, but until I can see a more proper comparison I am skeptical to believe you.

If I could for example, see a 7900 XT like mine + 7800x3d and 14900k benchmarks side by side in the same games, and games that are known to benefit from x3d cache (there are a lot of them) a plague tale, Jedi survivor, sim games, etc

until then I am not agreeing with you, and for some reason websites never show these benchmarks.
