When i'm running some 3d java applications my video card makes this strange hissing like sound. I know it's not the fan because i control that manually. It doesn't seem to happen for regular games.

edit: it seems to be influenced by what i'm looking at as well. I can change the tone of the hiss by looking at more or less polygons.

edit2: nevermind, apparently it's called "coil whine" and it's perfectly normal when running simple things at really high fps.

This is normal. When the fps is high, the noise 'tick' faster and when it is low because of heavy details, the 'tick' is slower. The sound is so obvious and annoying.

First I thought that it is the 4870x2 fan so i changed to water cooling, but the noise still exists.
Second I thought that it is because of stupid ATi design so I changed to GTX285, but still the same. So it happens to both Nvidia and ATi.

I have asked the same thing few months back. I forgot what the answer is, like something to do with high amount of power charged into the card, not sure though.

So the final answer is to stay with it; and love it because you can't get rid of it. Ohh wait, you can switch to lower end card, I think the noise is eliminated or lesser.

I'd say it's a manufacturing anomaly (tension between inductor legs, eg.) if a video card does not squeak.
Some silly people actually RMA cards that make such sounds...

you gotta slap that biatch if she whines:laugh:

LOL yeah my 9600GT would make that loud noise when playing Crysis!
