temp too high for a new gtx 670?

Hi,

I just got an MSI gtx 670 2GB edition card.

I downloaded the Sleeping Dogs demo, played it on the MAX settings at 1920^1200 res and the temp got as high as 76c!!!!!!

and the clock speeds were at defaults. i didnt manually set the clocks or anything but still the temp quickly went up to 76c and stayed there!!

is this normal for this card?

also, the fan speed was at 71% at that time and i was still getting 76c as my temp.

The fan speed for my card goes up to 80% only. i cant set it to 100%.

Why am i getting 76c at default clock speed while playing the game?

does it mean i cant even overclock? what should i do?

AFAIK, that is a normal temp for this card. And when the card is below 80°C the card will actually auto overclock and overvolt itself.

76c isn't too bad. I think they were desperate to avoid a dustbuster label with these cards or something.

I have the Asus DCU2...

I get up to 78c (GPU: 1056Mhz; MEM: 1803Mhz)

MSI AB shows my turbo boost going up, nearly 1300Mhz on the GPU.

I have to set fan speed to at least 80% to get down to 70c.

This is perfectly normal and safe.

oh ok.

the performance at MAX settings (which includes Extreme AA) at 1920^1200 is very good while playing Sleeping Dogs. fluid performance. i dont know the frame rate but it looks very normal and i dont notice any slow down.

but im wondering if the high temp can be related to the auto overclocking as well????

isnt the GPU gets throttled at 70C?

lol. no body is there to help me over this heating issue?

this card is really beast i can tell. Many people are experiencing slow down or bad performance when playing Sleeping Dogs on MAX settings which includes Extreme AA and SSAO but i dont notice any bad performance.

I dont really measure the framerate because i dont care about the numbers. its just as long as I can feel the performance is adequate enough for me i dont care what the number is. and in my case i dont notice any bad performance or slowdowns so i should be getting good framerates on max settings.

You don't have an overheating issue as people have already explained. If you are looking to lower your temperatures anyways, what is your room temperature? What kind of cooling are you using in your case and what case are you using?

It's the game. It will push your GPU further than anything to date. Just look around forums about it. The Extreme AA alone will jack your temps up 5-10C over High. It's 4xFXAA+4xSSAA It's gonna be working ANY card hard. Try AA on High you'll see it won't run quite as hot.

I am prefectly happy with my performance/IQ running it "Maxed" but just the AA on High and I turn off the Blur(I hate Blur)
Runs a solid 60fps all the time.

Running V-synch of course is also a good idea as "over running" frames that aren't necessary(60hz Monitor) is also going to make your card work harder than it has to as well.

My Settings/Benchmark Results

yeah. i use extreme AA and still the performance seems to be good. also i enabled Quality Motion Blue, but Vsync off.

no stuttering or slowdown. The picture quality is very clear. so this card is amazing. got it for $700 on finance. This was the only way I could afford the card.

erocker: actually at the time of playing the game, I had my heater on in my room as well. its cold in here where i live.

Also, my case is a black Zalman case. I have a fan in front of the case, one is at the side and another at the back.

The card is very long. I had to remove one of my hard drives to fit the card. i think its as long as a gtx 680.

How is the stock fan of the card? is it any good?

and he should setup a fan profile to get the fan to ramp up a bit more.

the card stayed on 76c in the game while the fan speed was at 70%. I manually created and save the profile for the fan.

and i cant increase the fan speed over 80%. is it possible to unlock the fan speed to 100%?

If the heat was blowing into the case that would be a problem. To you have a thermometer to check your room temperature?

Its fine. How hot is your heater though? That is probably your issue. Your ambients are probably pretty high. You should like it to be cold, then your hardware runs cooler.

Yeah it's a reference cooler so it's gonna be blowing the hot air out of the case. Fire up Sleeping Dogs and let your PC be your Heater! ;)

My PC room is pretty small and it takes no time at all gaming to get the ambient up enough that I want to open a window even in the dead on winter.

SO, uh, what problem are you having exactly? I'm sorry, but I read the thread and do not understand.

cadaveca: the problem is that my video card temp stays at 76c while playing Sleeping Dogs demo on Maxed out settings at 1920*1200 resolution. and this is with the fan speed at 70%.

The game looks very good and clear at the maxed out settings though. not sure if its also the game creating the heat.

As we have said that is normal. Try a different game/bench and see what you get.

I dont have any other games now because i formatted my hard drive and windows.

I only have Sleeping Dogs demo but i will be installing more games soon.

Also, do you know of any hack to unlock the fan speed limit?

its only up to 80%.

I get mid 70's as well with a gtx 560ti dcII, these temps are nothing to worry about, they are normal...graphic cards can take a lot higher.
I don't know why you want to get your fan higher, it will make a lot more noise for only a small gain in cooling, but I think you can try with msi afterburner.

There are a few graphics cards on the market at the moment which do not allow you to go over a certain fan speed. Yours may be one of them.

Just to check, you are aware that it's perfectly normal for a 670 to be at that temperature, and that a 670 can go all the way up to around 97°C before anything bad will occur.

i turned off my heater and opened my room's door.

what about the throttling? doesnt gtx 670 get throttled at 70c temp?

Well, that's a very good temperature for a stock cooler. Seems like you got a good card.

If I Remember correctly, due to the way the 600 series sets it's clock-speeds (with boost clocks etc) you can see a slight reduction in MHZ (10-20) when you reach 70°c-80°c, however I do not think temperature will affect your GPU's performance in any noticeable way until you're past 90°c.

Graphics cards run hot, and unless you use a really high end cooler, that is difficult to change!
