Glad you got set on the right path...I remember having a similar conversation with a co-worker (after 970/980 were released) in which I truly had to go into Professor Nerd mode to explain why to never buy a Titan (which he was planning on), especially for 1080p. At some point the general public became convinced these were the greatest things since sliced bread, while in reality they are SUPER MEGA EXTREMELY niche with a very short life-cycle.

Top-dollar doesn't always mean best performance for a given situation, as often cards are "aimed" at certain markets. Titans were (and titan-x is) aimed to be SLI'ed for playability at super high resolution, hence the VRAM...and such parts are always destined to be replaced by "performance" cards the next generation (granted often with less VRAM). As such, 970/980 replaced Titan (with better shader performance and slightly less vram...aimed at high-quality 1080p+ instead of playability at higher rez.)

Even within a similar generation, a part like the 780 (or vicariously 980ti) is often a better choice for a more reasonable setup...as a similar max tdp (eatten by vram in Titan) is applied to the clockspeed/shader core, allowing better playability at lower resolutions.

For 1080p (while pulling out all the stops), I would highly suggest something like 970/290x in a single or dual config (ala 295x2), dependent upon how important 60fps is to you.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
what I don't get is if I have g6b ram in this card and it cost me a hell of a lot of money, £460 to be precise
that's why a Titan is not a "gaming" card .... cost too much and the same gen top dog of each brand are, either above or on par, like the 780Ti or the 290/290X also with the current gaming scenario of today, rare are the games that reach more than 4gb usage hence 2gb more means nothing. (bound to change once the 8gb and above will be a standard ... but not too confident that it will be a "instant" change )

again i paid 189$ for my 290 ... AMD reputation to be the underdog and the false argument of power consumption, as i am one to not care about... so that's personal ;) (associated with the cliché that you need a nuclear reactor in your backyard to power one card) make the price of the 290/290X sweet.(while you can still find 780 and 780Ti going for around 500$ where i am ... for no reason other than being nvidia... )

for the 980 and 970 ... if i were you i'd wait until the 980Ti and R9 3xxX wave calm down and the price are fully known.

also this^ (tho 60fps stable at ultra seems to be a must for the OP :D )

Just lower the quality sliders a notch under Ultra. I seriously don't see any different between the two while playing. Even high looks great. It's medium where the change becomes very drastic. Also, FC4 shows an unusual perf gap between kepler and maxwell.

A 290 for $189 is pretty rad, and certainly not a bad option at the price. Hawaii prices fluctuate so much I have a hard time keeping track. I just did a quick scan of er...SCAN (.co.uk). 2 290x/970 seemed fairly similar to what he paid for the Titan, while alone should net (give or take a little finessing) 30 (for demanding titles) or 60fps in most titles at 1080p. Two of them, or 295x2 (in the off chance crossfire/sli is working that day in a said game) should allow most to achieve 60fps with very nice settings; not unlike a single 980ti/Fury X (or whatever Fiji is called), give or take how good scalability is in that title (I use an avg of 1.6x).

For him (that doesn't appear to be much of a tinkerer), a 980 is probably a fine place to start...but obviously I feel it's overpriced compared to other options and what playability thresholds they should be able to achieve (970/290 series is cheaper, should perform similar...a higher-end solution should reach levels unable by 980 without costing substantially more).
