Hey guys,

I need some help. I have been going through an issue over the last month that has been preventing me from fully updating my OS. Whenever I shut down my computer I the computer goes to the normal windows shut down screen (the blue background with "Shutting down..." and the spinning wheel. It will stay on the shutdown screen for hours (I don't know because I usually end up just going to bed after 2 hours of watching it.

I am assuming that after it says that it's shutting down for this extended period of time it has a BSOD. The reason I'm assuming such is because whenever I check it in the morning it will be back on the login screen and when I sign in it comes up with the error "windows has experienced an unexpected shutdown".

At any rate, specs are as follows:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
MoBo: Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4
CPU: AMD A10-6800K
RAM: 16GB 2133 MGHz
GPU: Gigabyte AMD R7 260x
PSU: Corsair HX750
HDD: 1TB 7200 RPM

Thanks a bunch in advance for the help! I really appreciate it!

Okay, I did that.

So here's what I've been doing so far. I uninstalled the AMD drivers and rebooted the system. After that none of my USB ports would work at all. I tried repairing the OS with my boot disc but it said that it was an inappropriate version. The only other option was to do a fresh install of Windows which could have lost several files.

I've been thinking lately of getting an SSD to use as a boot drive and I figured now would be a better time than any. So I grabbed a 250GB Samsung EVO 840 on my way home from work and here's what I've done so far.

  • Installed SSD
    Removed SSHD
    Booted from windows CD
    Installed windows
    Reinstalled SSHD
    Installed MoBo Drivers
    Installed AMD Drivers
    Run Windows Update and rebooted
    Installed Microsoft Security Essentials
    Installed MalwareBytes
    USB3 ports weren’t working
    Uninstalled USB3 controller
    Reinstalled USB3 controller and rebooted
    USB3 ports were then working.
Plugged in peripherals (webcam, mic, and printer)
    Plug-and-Play installed peripheral drivers
    Ran Windows Update and rebooted
    Computer wouldn’t shut down
Tested the reset switch and it rebooted immediately
Uninstalled webcam, mic, and printer through Device Manager
Rebooted and computer wouldn’t shut down
    Reset using reset switch
Used System Restore with restore point from before USB3 controller re-install

This made it so I could reboot freely and the computer would complete the shutdown. The thing that's concerning me now is that I've used the webcam and mic for a good year now and not had any issues and I've had the printer for a few months before this came up. I do know that AMD recently had a driver update, could that be causing some of this?

Again, thanks a ton for any help!

So I think I found out what's going on. The computer will have the error where it won't shut down whenever I have my keyboard plugged into one specific USB3 port. I've moved it to a different port and it's fine now.

I've actually had this same issue with a keyboard with a USB port on it...Razor Lycosa...on Vista...a driver update for the keyboard fixed it....and so did moving it to another port....never did figure why it did that.

when I'd go to turn off the PC it would just go to the splash screen with "shutting down" on the screen but it never did...holding the power button worked.

Do not use USB 3 for peripherals. Use legacy USB 2.0 for that, 3.0 does nothing for a keyboard.
