Yo!

Need some advice on what to do with my graphic card.
I should be happy with my 970 but I'm not. Been playing some games lately and noticed that I can't max most of them at 1080p.
Also noticed that after the 3.5GB VRAM mark there is some stuttering/lag, not really sure if this because of the "issue" with 0.5GB "slow memory" or not.
I'm thinking about getting a 980TI.
Been checking some videos comparing both but I'm not really sure if its worth it.
Also if I decide to go for it should I wait until they release the new cards for the price to drop or not ?
You know sometimes the wait is painful xD
I also know that if I upgrade I need to get a new PSU as well.

Thanks in advance.

Uh.. Yeah, you're over the 3.5vram for speeds and hit the shit part of the "4gb" which has the issues you explained.

As for getting the 980ti? That's on you if you want to spend that kind of money, but if you can get lucky this exists.

Depends if you can find it for a good price, or just go with a R9390 8GB.

Thanks for the advice, but im really going for the 980ti.
Now not sure which one to pick:
Asus STRIX GTX980 TI DC3OC 6GD5
MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G

I'm leaning towards the asus one but not sure.
Checked some reviews on overclock and such and looks like both would hit almost the same clocks when OC'd, but the asus wins in most of reviews

I would say wait, the price increase versus the performance gained is not worth it in my book. Don't even open game settings, will make your life much more bearable. No more "Very High shadows make it dip below 60, high runs great though. Do you see the difference? Of course not! But it makes me feel better!"

It's an old enermax build but has 50a on the 12v rail which is enough for a 980ti

I can say I'm not disappointed with my 980Ti (Zotac AMP! Omega). I can run her at 1315/2160 (boosts upwards of 1470 on core) if I need to run her at these speeds. I play most FPS or third person games across 5670x1080 - settings on these games are near maxed to maxed and it holds 60fps for the most part.

In your situation, if you're strictly on 1080p, I would seriously hold out for a few months to see what Pascal can offer. If you don't like what they have, then look towards a shift to a 980Ti.

Eh... Thanks guys for all the advice but I just went "f*** it" mode and I got the Asus Strix 980ti OC
Was that right or wrong, only the future will tell.
I might "upgrade" the resolution, if I can say that, . Might get a new screen next month.
@dirtyferret Yeh, it is enough, but I think might be better to get a better one. This one is some years old now. Maybe 5 or so.

Hi again,
Well since I figured that Asus Strix got limited voltage and theres no way to unlock it I got a bit disappointed, wanted to be able to do bios mod and overclock it to 1500/8000.
But can't go higher than 1400/8000, need to increase the voltage which is at the max 1.2V already.
I've got the chance to exchange it for an msi 980ti gaming 6g.
Should I go for it ? Not sure if I would be able to hit 1500/8000 with the msi either.
What you guys think ?
thanks

No way we can make a valid suggestion based on being able to obtain a certain OC. Even if there is a card known for being able to OC to those speeds, there is no guarantee the card you get is capable of that OC. Luck of the dice.

well for 1080 res a 98ti will be a way too much, what about single 980? and a great seasonic PSU since you said that want to replace or upgrade it,

i like gigabyte Video cards so much, also MSI and Zotac are great makers.... i dont trust asus, have experienced so much problems with it and dont want argue about it,
Galaxi Hall of fame video cards are pretty strong cards lad, you might check them up!

also the fact that Pascal is coming pretty soon may be a excellent point for waiting a little bit for the new models, that may bring a drop on the current ones and also new choices on video card solution,

Regards,

Yeh true, OC is luck but now im not sure anymore...
And by the way since you bring up that matter, I don't really understand why people keep saying that 980ti is more than enough for 1080p.
In most recent games the fps are just around 70-90 (Rise of tomb raider for example) Its barely above 60 fps.
I like a smooth gameplay with max settings, i hate playing a game at 45-50 fps, for some people it might be ok but for me its not.
Thats why I dont really understand why people say its overkill for 1080p.
But anyways Thank you!

I understand why you want to best performance you can get, but you do understand that the difference between a 980ti at 1400/8000 compared to a 980ti at 1500/8000 is going to be pretty much unnoticable (only 2-4 fps in most cases). You'd be better off turning down some settings that are basically unnoticeable in game while playing.

I have vanilla GTX 980 and it plays everything I throw at it at max with framerate around 100fps, most of the time it's in sync with my 144Hz monitor. GTX 98Ti would be an overkill. Or plenty of reserve for the future, depending on how you look at it. I feel absolutely fine with 1080p. Don't need more at all.

I'm not saying im not happy, I'm happy but I always want more XD.
As far the fps.
At the momment im playing Rise of Tomb Raider and the Wticher 3
ROTR: Max settings with FFXA the fps are between 70-100 but mostly around 75.
The Witcher 3 pretty much the same but sometimes goes around 65.
Thats why I don't understand the overkill part xD
But yeh I thought about that @BarbaricSoul said yeh I'll just keep the Strix.

On my 980Ti, I max most games I play at 5760x1080 and no issues holding 60fps. Depending on the game and the settings, sometimes the fps can dip, but nothing that's game breaking. If I run into issues with the fps really tanking, then I just adjust down the AA/AF and shadows and it usually resolves the hit to the fps.

If I game at 1080p, I can max out any game at hold 60fps.

I don't run my card on it's max OC, if I did the clocks would be at 1340/2180. I run the clocks at 1253/1805 and I don't have issues on 1080p. My i5-4670k is generally at stock speeds unless I'm screwing around with OC and don't reset it, then she'll be around 4.4-4.6.

Well thats at card's stock settings.
But I checked benchmarks in those games and the fps I get are in the "normal" zone for the 980 ti.

waiting for pascal makes pretty much sense... prices may drop down and also will see more options ...
so the brightest option is to wait for new cards...
