I have a 5850 coming Tuesday. I was wondering how much of an improvement the q9xxx series would offer compared to my q6600?

What are your temps like on the q66? Not sure but I do know a certain person that kept his Q9650 @ 3.6Ghz and had no issues. So it could be quite an upgrade if you play your cards right and have a good cooler to start with.

EDIT:

Upon looking you currently have an AC7 Pro. Thats why I asked what your current temps are like.

I think it depends which q9000 series cpu your getting, to be honest I wouldnt go lower than a Q9450 coming from benchmarks and reviews, try to get a Q9550 if you can afford it man.

I'm with JrRacinFan here. I think don't think it's worth upgrading on an LGA 775 platform if you already have a Q6600.

You're gonna spend ~$150 and only get like like 15% performance boost, clock for clock. That money would be better served in a SSD or better yet (IMO) saved and put towards an i5/i7.

Depends on what you do with your system. From my point of view, it's fine just the way it is. If you are really wanting to shit out FPS and what not and have the money then why the hell not.

But to me, that system is fine. You may find in the most demanding games the Q6600 MIGHT bottle neck a few frames, but nothing to notice in every day life.

I much rather upgrade to SSD instead of the CPU. Upgrading the HD is probably be correct in this case.

+1 5850 awesome card game play will be much better looking smoother graphics and more kills in COD. The q9xxx series will just get you more snap not dramatic but noticeable.

I hope it makes that much of a difference but since I'm a full supporter of the COD:MW2 boycott. I'll have to wait for BF:BC 2 :)
