I have about 5MB/s Throughput on my wireless network,and I stream alot of video upstair to my 360 in the bedroom. Does anyone know what the maximum bitrate a video can be so it wont lag when streaming. I get some lag right now with a video that is 8616 Kbps

Well that depends on your video file. A blu ray rip can be 25Mb/s

A file with a 3500kbps video stream and a 500 kbps audio stream.
Togheter they're 4000kbps = 4Mb/s which should work on your network.

Do you think I can get good quality out of a file such as that? What type of compression would you use? H.264 or xvid/divx, WMV?

5MBps = 40Mbps. i am playing a 13 gig x264 rip and it averages about 35-40 Mbps with the DTS track. you will be pushing it if you do not encode as some scenes will be around 90-100 even after transcode.

I have found that wireless is worthless for streaming HD high quality material. Now if there was a way to set a buffer then it would work great. I know VLC has some setting in relation to buffering..

It's actually higher than 5 mb/s now, I have wireless N

Is powerline networking worth a shot?

the problem with wireless is that packets can arrive in the wrong order (jitter) or get lost randomly. with streaming, that tends to suck.


powerline is better than wireless for sure, but why not just find a way to run a cable?

i could try to run a cat6 but the routers on the 1st floor and this 360 is on the top floor, so i gotta run wires through walls and floors and it gets to be a pain in the ass.

dont forget the cables are weather proof, you could run it out a window and up the outside wall - and if looks are a concern, feed it through a narrow PVC pip and attach that to the wall - get it the same color as the house paint and you're good to go.
