I've always been a coder, but lately I've been learning about system administration and network administration so I can become more well rounded and get in to devops. What got you all in to networking? What certifications do you have? I'm studying for my CCNA/CCNA-Sec

well I initaly entered vocay school for programming, they didn't end up having it, got into networking instead bc it was neat, and keep getting better at it.

I want to get my CCNA but finances are tight right now. to take the test. I'm starting on the studying part at least tho... thejesus gave me a buncha prep stuff so that was cool of him. jesus saves! XD

At the moment I'm mostly focusing in wifi stuff and been doing a ton of reviews and beta testing and some wifi deployments and such..

I just had to set up a fat server / thin client network for a client of mine. Headache and a half. Wanted windows 7 but their pos system didn't support it. Took me a month of weekends trying to figure it out. THen I told them fuck you and upgraded them to windows 10 which killed all the issues except it created 1 huge issue. The wibukey [usb licensing dongle] isn't auth'ing one of the systems, even though the configs are the same across all three. Before that issue, there were so many issues trying to redirect the devices plugged in to the thin client. The pole displays, receipt printers, and scanners wouldn't redirect properly until I installed win 10 pro.

I started out being into computers since before I was a teenager but didnt really know what I wanted so in college I went for a small degree then got a job as a network tech at a manufacturing plant. I learned as much as I could from the network engineer and I really liked it so my major was change to networking and I finished my second degree in networking and communications management. I now work for a ISP building networks.

What hypervisor were they using? If it's MS Hyper-V it's best to keep the platform unified like:

Server 2008R2>Windows 7 clients
Server 2012>Windows 8 Clients
Server 2012R2>Windows 8.1 clients

and you have the fewest headaches.

Also don't they image stuff out? if so they should all act the same unless something got borked in the process on the ONE machine

I have them on the free ESXi platform. It's a good type 1 hypervisor.

nice! That's something I'd like to do.

esxi shouldn't be having too many issues with platforms then since it's platform agnostic unlike hyper-v which has intergration services and such where dependancies are harder. Hell for the longest time I couldn't get the intergration services running right on 10 on hyper-v till like 5 months ago.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
Started with hardware but was impractical since I cant get a job doing any hardware manufacturing so I started to learn to code. My first forray into networking came when I became a domain administrator. Our entire network was in shambles and prevented me from doing my job. alot of our satellite offices were offline or didnt replicate or had networking issues all day. I started simple picking up stuff here and there usually just enough to get by. That was a few years back now I'm the CIO and manage all of it.

congrats solaris! I remember when I first talked to you [for the most part] back in 05. I'm glad you made something for yourself. I'm still spinning my wheels and such. I had a name change on here, I know you still remember me [bikr692002] I was an unintentional troll, I look back and cringe. Actually vawrvawerawe reminds me of myself when I was younger. Super egotistical/thinks they know everything, etc. A breadth of knowledge but no depth. As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, lol. I'm trying to get my shit together, which is why I built a homelab.

I think all of us are trying to get thier shit together... It's taking a lot more effort for me since I'm at the wrong place at the wrong time.. I'm epically misplaced which makes it harder for me :(

LAN parties starting back in 1996. First piece my friends and I put money into was an 8-port 10Mb hub with a 10Base2 port, much like this one:

"The hub rule" was certainly in effect -- no file transfers during gaming! You wait until the pizza is here and we're taking a break. Most of the time it was 7 or 8 of us, but the coax allowed us to expand if all 12 of us got together. Eventually we upgraded to 100Mb switches which was like having real sex for the first time. You know it's going to be better than the beating off you had been doing, but you didn't know just how much better until it happens.

I'm not a network engineer today, but have re-wired the buildings of the last couple places I've worked. Handled connectivity with fiber providers, VoIP systems, PoE, remote access for employees, etc. SMB level stuff.

Got into it because I had nothing to do, got out because health. I did get CCNA 1/2 and got an offer from the school to do 3/4 as well. 5.0 is apparently so different the schools dropping it and they wanted to give those witj stuff left a chance to complete it.

I'm pretty sure I have to learn everything from scratch again though. Got until january.

I've no idea what to use it for though. Is it usable anywhere on its own?

I started working in Enterprise IT for a big Multi-National back in 2007. At the time I was just the PC support guy, but I was part of a great team who taught me some on the job knowledge of networking. There was something about it that I gravitated to. It's really only the last four years I've been doing anything significant on the networking side. But now I consult, design, maintain and fault find on a variety of networking products.

As for certifications I have a CCNA and a JNCIA, however I've been working with Cisco unified communications, wireless and security products for years, it's just a matter of doing the exams to get certified. I'm probably just going to go straight to the CCNP R&S as it looks better on a Resume.
