Hey guys, just wondering if you could help me out here. I currently have a core2 duo e8500 and have been very happy with its performance in gaming. But lately and I think this will continue, I have been doing alot of video encoding and extracting of large files. Well when I am doing this stuff it really bogs down the ol' machine so I'm wondering if I should go quad core. Which quad core would give me equal performance to my e8500? The problem is I dont have a lot of time these days and I have to get on my computer, get extracting or encoding, then check my mail and things like that. The checking the mail or just going online becomes slow as heck when the machine is extracting or encoding. Thanks in advance! Futher specs on the side bar.

The Q9550 would be nice. It can overclock really good and has a 12mb cache.

I agree with FreedomEclipse - unless you really need a quad, I'd stick with the E8500, d'you know the stepping & revision? If you don't get any benefit from OC'ing it, then definitely look into an E0 Q9550 - my C1 isn't that great, but I have managed to get from 2.83GHz to 3.8GHz.

most people have managed to get their Q9550's to 4Ghz but its still a struggle id say. plus you need to make sure you have the right hardware to take it to 4ghz otherwise theres not a lot of point.

& since the 775 market is officially dead & they wont be releasing more processors for the socket - its a bit of a no brainer to spend money on a dead platform UNLESS its for a graphics card, hard drives or more RAM etc etc.

775 is dead in the terms that they will most probably not offer processors of higher performance on that platform anymore. you can still get Q8x00's but the Q9550's & up are becoming hard to find since a lot of people bought last stocks to ensure their system was as fast as it could possible go before jumping onto i5/i7 platform.

same goes with all the 775 related hardware. sooner or later 775 motherboards will almost fade completely from the retail market - making Ebay your best friend but even then so with very very limited stock.

theres no longevity in the 775 - its come, its seen & it has outsold AMD by a storm (C2D/C2Q series - not the P4)

I suppose you can upgrade to a quad if you already had high end kit to put it in - Asus Maximus etc etc but the pw doesnt so theres only so far he'd be able to take the processor as for performance clock for clock clock performance. the i5 is superior & also future proof to a certain extent as the platform is fairly new. & because of that its better to save your money for something that will get you a bigger boost in performance rather then a small jump.

that E8500 & more ram is all he needs - the option is also vastly cost effective compared to the likes of buying a new processor of a quad core calibre.

so think & say what you will. the 775 has long been on its way out.

When were 775 released? 2006? It has survived for about as long as all other sockets (save early P4) I think.. Time to go.

The Q9550 would be nice. It can overclock really good and has a 12mb cache.

That's not why it overclocks well by the way.

It would still overclock to the same speed, if not more with no cache at all.

I say if your going for a quad ye old q6600s are grand, they can be picked up for cheap and they run pretty sweet.

Not 4ghz chips like the q9550 q9650 etc but fast enough for most things.

Ignore those silly comments about 775 being dead. 775 is alive and well and will remain relevant for the next year and then some.

The Q9500 is coming out, half the cache of the Q9550 but also nearly half the cost. I'd get it.

Aye 6mb is plenty for a cache I recon!

Should be a really good chip.

Agreed. Unless you multitask like crazy there's not a lot to be gained from going quad.

Um helloooooo he said he is now about to start doing a lot more "video editing" and "extracting of large files" and does need to multitask too which is just about the BEST reason to go from a dual to a quad even if it means sacrificing some clock speed.

Do you people even read the OP or just go with the herd?

and a +1 to you sir.

Op is going to be needed a quad core if he's editing, trust me quad vs dual when it comes to converting /final publishing of a video file is no contest.

its also handy if you just generally multi task like a crazy person.

If you are doing a lot of encoding, which you definitely seem to be doing, you really want 12MB of cache. It really helps in that situation. And a Quad definitely helps out! Even at stock speeds, a Q9550(or even Q9450) would spank an overclocked E8500 in encoding, and the difference in games would be minimal actually since your games are likely GPU limitted, and if they aren't up the settings!

Definitely look into the Q9650, Q9550, or Q9450. Also, if you are looking used, try searching for a Xeon equivalants X3370, X3360, X3350. The Xeons tend to actually sell for a little cheaper used, mainly because people don't know what they are, and many don't know they can go in pretty much any desktop 775 board that will accept the Q9000s.

You can also look into an X3220, it is the equivalent of a Q6600, slightly older tech(65nm and only 8MB L2), but damn respectable chips, especially for encoding. Their clock speeds are a little low at stock due to the lower FSB, but they have a 9 multiplier, so getting them up over 3.0GHz is easy. And the X3220s tend to hit 3.6GHz with ease. The best part is that they tend to sell for dirt cheap, even on ebay, where I just picked one up for $99!

Lga 775 isnt dead my fellow tpuzers.
You just need to find a DEAL(microcenter)(Forums) on the lga 775 hardware thats overpriced, and the Ep45-Ud3p Is perfect for everything at high clocks.
Basicly
Also hacking sli on p45 boards is easy now :). I did it .
My q9550 running 4.0Ghz 24/7 with only ddr2 memory is equivlant to a i7 940 at encodeing benchmarks :). And that pleases me alot acctualy so life is good :D.
Also im only using 1.232volts for the 4.0ghz and i can jump strait into, 4.25-4.3Ghz 24/7 Which i might do soon, but i dont want to stress my power supply :).
Also I do note for you
Get a q9550 for double the cache, the q9500 will be good but a q6600 would be better but just a little warmer. Im just in need for 2 more gigs of ram, and im good :)..... So far LGA 775 CANT BE DEAD. Why might you ask? Well for the simple FACT that q9x50 chips are faster the Phenom II chips already, Clock for clock my q9550 is faster then a 955-940-965 haahahaha. And my q9550 at 4.0Ghz is just as fast as a AMD Phenom II chip at 4.2-4.3Ghz :D

Also the q9550 is expensive now though.... Its sad, but i got my q9550 for 169.99 at microcenter and turned out to be a golden batch E0 q9550 :D. So it overclocks extremely well......... Take for instance i managed to get my q9550 at 4.63Ghz with 1.44 volts, impressing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q6600 is 65nm too.

They're the same chip other then the Xeon has server instructions, supposedly they can take more heat as well. ( although TJ max is the same so probably lies TBH)

Running a 3220 now actually : ]

775 dead? I think there is still a LOT of people who don't plan to give up on their Q6600/E8400's for a while yet. There's no need to.

Q6600 is 65nm too.

They're the same chip other then the Xeon has server instructions, supposedly they can take more heat as well. ( although TJ max is the same so probably lies TBH)

Running a 3220 now actually : ]

I was talking older tech compared to the Q9000/X3300 series. The X3220 and Q6600 are actually identical, down to the instruction sets, there really is nothing special about the X3220 other than slightly better binning to withstand the tougher environments of servers.

I too am running a X3220 currently, in my backup rig.

775 dead? I think there is still a LOT of people who don't plan to give up on their Q6600/E8400's for a while yet. There's no need to.

I thought the 3220s had two extra features, I've no idea what those features are but I remember when comparing them on intels site the list of features being slightly longer on the 3220

Could be going mad though look up things so often the information can blur sometimes.
