What will the cheapest upgrade from ATI3870x2 be?

yeah...1680x1050 isn't a huge requirement anymore excepting Crysis and possibly GTA IV depending on your CPU..anything HD4830+ will run 1680x full, no sweat.

the only thing you will get from getting a 4850 if you already have a 3870x2, you might as well just wait for new gpus to come out and for the prices to drop

On the subject of cheap cards: I'm building my first (budget) rig andI recently bought 2 EVGA 9600GT cards. At the time I got them for $129. each. Are these decent cards? or did I just not do enough research.

I would just pick up a 1gb 4870. Can't beat it for the price and should give you plenty advantage over your current 3870x2.

9600GT's are plenty powerful. My friend runs one and it's on par with an 8800GT. You may have overpaid a little bit, but they are still great.

Saying its powerful is rather subjective. For the price of two 9600gt's you could get something..... better in a single card because of the CPU limitations of multi-GPU configs(Crossfire and SLi).

Yeah he is right. You could have got a 4870 or GTX 260 in that price.

My vote still goes with the GX2, I beleive they can be had for under $200 in the US, they more or less match a GTX280 for performance which means it's a bit quicker than the 4870 or GTX260.

i vote for hd4850x2, it's more powerfull and based on newer tech, like direct x 10.1, 55 nm, and it's cheap too compared to hd4870x2

Just the same size as a GTX260 or 280 but yes, the fan is quite noisy, i just wear headphones and tell it to fookin shut up

An excellent card, although it has taken 2 months since release and it still does not have "official" catalyst driver support unless you count the RC3 beta 8.13 drivers, a sad state to be honest, ohhhh and in many cases, 2 single 4850's are faster.......but I am sure that will change with official driver support.
