basicly: music, few tabs max. dvdrip quality up to I think 576p, word, excel simply usage and quake 2 or heroes 3. (ok ok maybe something better with good gpu)

With that being said..... I still managed to get a L4D, GW1 & a few higher req games running smoothly on a single core, 2.7Ghz AMD64 3000+ running with a 256mb X850XTPE at 1080p with almost no problems to speak of. I did experience a little drop in FPS when getting face raped by a zombie hoard but for the better part max settings @1080p.

I think i even tried some Halo or Crysis 2 on it. Crysis 2 couldnt max out but i think i got some decent play with it on that set up.

Sorry.... I the more advanced tech we get, the quicker i seem to forget how slow everything originally was. My first self built was a 939 system and i built quite a few of them for friends and stuff. My dad had a P4 which was a hand-me-down from one of his friends but i was never allowed to touch it.

939 was also around the time i started cutting my teeth on the whole pc enthusiast scene so i didnt know a huge lot about stuff.

My room mate still uses a very old HP laptop that has a P4. Yeah, he is a cheap skate. I really hate it when he has a problem and I have to work on it. Slow as hell, even compared to my little lowly 1.4GHz E-300 APU.

P4's were a disaster... is sticked maintaining Pentium 3 Tualatin machines than renewing to those halfbreeds firstly at 423 Socket, they performed simply better. They were HOT, unoptimized HT code and first motherboard chipsets were buggy utter rubbish.

It was RAMBUS at first if I recall correctly, it took a year to get a chipset with DDR memory controller

I'm thinking there is no answer to this question.

A reasonable person would tell you that even a low end processor running system, available right now at a bog box store, could run laps around a P4 in almost every task. The bigger problem, as far as I can see, is support for some ancient hardware. When is the last time you saw a PATA drive on the market? How about a stick of DDR1? Perhaps even a motherboard from that era without some capacitors that have seen better days?

P4 based systems are outmoded, because all the surrounding hardware was outmoded. They weren't the best chips on the market when they were released, were thoroughly outpaced by the successors (Core architecture), and took immense amounts of power to run the things that they did run.



On the flip side, you'll always find some cheap person who doesn't want to upgrade. If it's actually a question of money, you have somebody in dire straits. More often than not, it's somebody wanting a cheap computer, who will complain about how slow it is. That kind of person will never admit to the fact that an upgrade is needed, because "it's fast enough." The truth is that it isn't. $300 would buy a much better system, and they don't see the need to spend it until they've played with a better system. An hour worth of work on a modern Pentium system would take much longer on a P4, but that's difficult for some people to quantify.

You are correct. RDRIMMs were an absolute pain, and if a slot wasn't populated you had to buy a spacer. On top of that, the cost was absolutely insane for a pair of sticks.

P4's still have purposes but gaming is not one of them. Hell even core2duo's are showing their age. I have one as a provisioning machine at work and its slows down to a crawl when I have mutliple programs opened and it has 4GB of ddr2.

I had a P4 shuttle, it was pretty bad but it could play Doom 3 acceptably. The 939 machine I replaced it with was much better, but it also had better cooling. That 939 was capable of playing league of legends last year before the mobo finally blew a cap.

The P4 had a troubled history. You should read up a bit on it to understand why people would say it's been obsolete much earlier. The short story is that the P4 heralded the end of the old "MOAR megahertz" way of building because it ran into practical issues and the lessons learned from that were actualized starting with the Core 2 line.

They are ok for Htpc Tasks but beyond that yes they are considered obsolete.
