Yeah but I think hes an Nvidia guy. ;)

too bad, he needs to snuff his nvidia fanboyism if he is. being a fanboy can keep you blind to better bang/buck deals. the Hd 4650 is FAR better than the 8600GTS or 9400GT.

nah with and open mind you should be ok  but most aren't, like my brother and his roommate are all nvidia and won't even look at an ATI card lol, my bro calls the HD 48XX series crap yet he runs a G80 8800GTS 320mb lol.

If your little brother is kind of gamer who would like to play at high settings with more fps than he would get at low settings with either of those pos cards, get this, he will love you for it.

Seriously, don't get the 8600gts, I had one before it silently died on me, it wasn't good at all. STALKER was horrible unless you truned off dynamic lighting, Crysis ran at 20-25 fps average on med-low settings, BF2 didn't even run at high settings 1440x900 2xaa completely without lag.

Not really. An 8600gt is faster than an 8600gts clock for clock because it has tighter memory timings.

So the GTS basically has an extra 6 pin but looser memory timings?

hope you get a card that fits your needs and is reasonably priced ^.^ although judging by his post "this is for my little brother, so nothing fancy. Perhaps there's a better card around the same price, or less? I am open to any suggestions."

im assuming his brother doesnt need that much processing power o_O and probably wont be overclocking his card

eh, i would agree, but the HD 4770 is like twice his budget lol, if anything he's not looking for great performance from my guess, but theSaphire HD 4670 is only 15bucks more and would beat the HD 4650, and just shit on the 8600GTS and 9400GT. For its price the HD 4670 is still a good deal.

@OP if your bro or whoever is buyin this can save for the HD 4770 then def go with hat's suggestion, if not then get the HD 4650. if you can only push your budget a lil get the HD 4670, there's a card for each price segment, u just need to pick your budget and pick 1 of hte 3 cards we've laid out for you depending on your budget.

Well, my friend used to use a 8600gts, overclocked that thing to like 930/1900/2200. Would that be better, or the hd 4670?

and is the 4770 really really good? I have not used a ati card before, not that I am not open to them, just been too lazy to get a new card :p

Oh and is the 4770>9600gt? How do the 8800gt compare to those?

mind you the HD4770 literally bites at the heels of the HD4850/GTS250 performance, and it's minimum frames are actually better in some cases even if it's average is lower, but min is was really matters. HD4770 is one of those revolutionary cards for the budget market, just like the 8800GT was for mainstream when it was released. can't go wrong in anyway getting teh HD4770, i'm getting one myself.

jeez didn't know it was such a beast there. I am convinced to get one of those instead. Which brand would be the best? I see one that has memory clock of 800 and another with 3.2gbs. Whatever do those mean? oh and is there a difference between DDR5 and GDDR5?

nah, they post 800mhz cause that's the memory's actual operating frequency, but the Double Data Rate and speed of GDDR5 makes it equivilant to 3.2ghz. some manufacturers list the memory's speed as 800, others 1600, others 3.2ghz. same thing with memory DDR5 and GDDR5 are the smae thing if your looking at graphic cards, though technically it shouldn't list DDR5 as that's a different type of mmeory from GDDR. brand shouldn't matter since they're all reference, or in other words all made exactly the same. Though warranty wise i'd pick XFX since it's double life. whichever is cheapest is what you should look at.
