I'd watch out for Unreal Engine 4 titles. I don't think any launched yet but they will soon.

You ask what's the most "advanced technically"

This could mean anything from visual fidelity to efficinency with the CPU... not quite sure how to answer this.

If going for "how it looks" and not "how it performs" yeah any of the above are a good bet.

I'd say Project Cars and Assetto Corsa are great too. The physics and graphics are fantastic in those titles (though I prefer the physics in Assetto Corsa as I believe it feels more real). Also I'm surprised at how well GTA V runs with the amount of highly detailed stuff going on in the foreground and background. I'd put these games at the top of my list for being most "technically advanced".

Well, the main problem people always have and make a mistake based on that is merging artistic decisions and designs with engine technological capabilities.

Nice example of that is previewing SAME engine in a closed corridor game like Doom 3 and Crysis. The nature of our perception will automatically prefer the beautiful open world, kilometers of open sea, tons of vegetation swinging in the wind, sun passing across the sky, partially hiding behind the clouds, casting god rays over a dark limited visibility corridors even though those can be technologically just as demanding to render with reflections, mist, smoke, heat haze etc.

Games like GTA5, Witcher 3, TES:Skyrim, Crysis, Vanishing of Ethan carter will always give you perception they have a more capable engine than the game using EXACT same engine but with mostly indoor scenes.

Cryengine certainly deserves mention, especially with what Roberts Space Industries are doing with it. Pretty, physics galore, destructible models, and expansive environments. It's surprising they don't have to make a custom engine to pull it off.

totally agreed, SC is quite impressive for a Alpha stage game and what's it's headed toward ... if it keeps it's promise for me it will be all i always wanted Eve online to be ...

A blend between both worlds performance & stunning visuals my money is on Crysis 3. At least when it comes to visual fidelity Crysis 3 is unbeatable.

Witcher 3 from what i've seen brings the most eye candy possible for a video game. Lacking big time visual fidelity for that "look at me i'm so shiny " kinda thing. I don't know how to express myself with more elaborate words o_O. And from the performance part i think it's demanding enough but not exaggerated. As for any future updates on performance optimization it's just not gonna happen. They are not gonna make it run more smoother and be less demanding on the hardware. You either have what it takes or don't. For the people complaining about the system requirements look at what Witcher 3 brings to the table compared to A.C. Unity.

I'd say probably the new GTA,Stalker series,Fallout/Skyrim series,Crysis/Far Cry series.
Max Payne (latest) is pretty good but..I like the open world stuff.
I've heard/seen some good things about AC:Unity, too.

For me, System Shock 2 engine (Dark Engine) has by far the most capable engine I've seen in years. 16 years have passed and some scenes have lighting and shading so good it makes it look almost like a photography and not a decade and a half old real-time render (especially when you pair it with very high FSAA and AF). I'm not even kidding. And with few tweaks, the new updated engine (NewDark) looks absolutely amazing. Pretty much no other engine from that era aged so well. Hell, many games released years after look like crap today.
Shading, lighting, shadowing and the way textures fake bump mapping is just outstanding. Sure it's old and doesn't have all the fancy shaders and shit, but we are talking about a 16 years old tech. The fact I'm still praising it today speaks for itself and I'm a tech nutcase. And the fact that random people are able to modify the engine without any source code so it can render high res textures and insane amount of polygons that were never designed to be used within the original engine is even more amazing.

If Looking Glass and Irrational Games would exist today, new incarnations of Dark Engine would be the most advanced engine on Earth or at least at the very top.

I always take technical as meaning anything non creative. You have stories, characters, mission structure, art, then you have the technical side, which includes visuals, performance, and lack or presence of bugs.

Haven't played Daylight, but not really interested. It's easy to see why it's averaging only about 5/10 in reviews. Procedural Generation on it's own isn't enough to sustain a game. It really only makes an already too simple game slightly different. Daylight appears to be a game with a few good concepts wasted on a short campaign, repetitive and often annoying gameplay mechanics, and weak pop out scares.

Not every things about fancy graphics.

Daylight is a sweet dame until you get to powerful but overall a good game and made a good improvement over their last one.

Elite Dangerous would have to be another how ever lacks content but we all know that was released early due to SC on the way next year which seems more about fancy graphics than good gameplay like GTA 5 but it's what sells, Although ED graphics are really nice still.

Cryengine come a long way and it's improving and interested what they do next with FC5, Maybe they will finally get the coop right hahahahaha as their is no chance of a true Ghost Recon ever coming back but FC2 3 4 are the closest you can get to it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the car physics in GTAV. I LOVED the car physics and damage models in gta iv. Also as bad as it sounds, running over pedestrians doesn't seem as satisfying as it was in GTA IV. I still praise rockstar for GTAV though - however they did have a long time to get it right.

But then again we had Carmageddon 2 like 17 years ago with car deformations that are imo still a benchmark even for modern games. The way how accurately cars deformed upon collision and how you could split them in half by hitting building corners in the middle of the car, it was freaking insane and still is. Not to mention how well physics behaved and how they gave the game modularity in that regard (flipper mode, moon gravity, Jupiter gravity, how cars behaved on oil spills, how they behaved when punched with that spring weapon etc). Considering what kind of compute power we have today, I'm rather disappointed by the lack of really cool gameplay related advancements. If anything we've gone several years back in that regard with everyone just obsessed over visuals alone.

I feel the same.

You are so right on everything ,and how did i forget Son of Rome. Unfortunately there is a pattern here. All around bad games. Nothing happens in Crysis 3,you move from check point to check point. Forget about the story, forget about "what characters ? ". Felt same thing with Crysis 1 (it got a little bit better with Crysis 2). Son of Rome is also mindless and dull. So wish people from Bioware would team up with anything that has to do with Cryengine graphics.

I felt so bad when i codent even get close to Daylight on my rig. Then i went to a friends house and gave it a try on his computer. The game is bad! Very bad!!! It's just like dead island. And i never liked dead island.
I did co-op campaign on Dead island with the same friend. I love lan parties and co-op,but D.A. must have been the worst . It was a few hours of complete struggle. So,so bad!

I'm just going to throw it out there. Cities: Skylines is pretty advanced, but for a slightly different reason than graphics. I say it is advanced because everything in the city is simulated. Every person is their own entity that is constantly simulated, every vehicle is constantly simulated. It also very much used 4 cores on the CPU to do this.

That's hilarious that SimCity/SimCity Societies did the same thing but they didn't exploit multi-core technology. It takes David to show Goliath how to do it right. Pathetic; EA deserves what's coming.
