If u get it cheap 970 is about enough on every game now @1080p and can keep it for 1-2 years if budget low

Speaking of the gtx970, what's the deal with this evga lawsuit I'm reading about? (I've been outta the loop) In a nutshell, was there a mass issue with the 970 or just a few bad eggs? if it's no big deal. I'm looking into a 970 for sure. :)

Don't listen to Ungari, there are 4GB of VRAM. You can read up on this yourself. He's correct that it is regardless of manufacturer.

However, the lawsuit settlement is over the duplicitous action by NVIDIA in not telling people that .5GB of VRAM operates more slowly. It still operates faster than if the action was paged out to system RAM.

Is it an issue? Yes. Have most people not even noticed it? Yes. We've owned two in our house and never encountered it. It's a great card that earned most of its sales after this news came out. Read user reviews and you will see that most purchased it knowing about the VRAM and also encountered no issue. The performance is worth it.

Are there better, newer cards from both sides? Yes, as you've already seen in this thread.

Make up your mind on your own, but I'm sure if you review his posting history, you will notice Ungari is noticeably partisan, something that is not helpful no matter which GPU manufacturer it is.

One of our very upstanding sellers and community members has one for sale here if you are serious: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/evga-gtx-970-4gb-ssc-and-200gb-sansdisk-microsd.229238/

I have two 970's in SLI running BF1 in 2K resolution on my work PC. I get over 100FPS maxed settings DX11. DX12 now cause it to get stuck at 50FPS and massive drops and I would probably say thats due to SLI issues.

The Used GTX 970 that is for sale on these forums for $175. A NEW RX 480 4GB(Full 4GB FAST VRAM) has been selling for $169.
This one right now goes for $169 after Rebate, but I have seen in the past weeks other custom boards go for even less;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...37049&cm_re=rx_480_4gb-_-14-137-049-_-Product

If you want the 8GB VRAM model, and you should, this custom PCB currently goes for $210 after Rebate;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...50774&cm_re=rx_480_8gb-_-14-150-774-_-Product

The RX 480 is according to all benchmarks a superior GPU to the GTX 970, even here on TPU.

The reason both Nvidia and Radeon are increasing the amount of VRAM is because even now more and more games are utilizing it.
This trend will only continue as new games are released.

Now, if you must have an Nvidia 900 Series product, then as I said originally, you should get an excellent deal on a 980Ti 6GB VRAM.
This card is still relevant today, and should be enough VRAM to serve you in the next couple of years if you like games with cutting edge textures.

Here is a great deal for a NEW 980Ti at $265 after Rebate:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JHQT1SE/?tag=tec06d-20

If given the choice between these three cards a few months ago before I purchased, I would have chosen this ASUS 980Ti, especially since it fits my plans for a White/Black build.
So much for partisanship!

As I already said, if you would polish up your reading comprehension skills, there are better cards. "Are there better, newer cards from both sides? Yes, as you've already seen in this thread."

The OP wants a 970 or 980. So I have answered within that context. Your feeble attempt at not appearing partisan (as Earthdog notes above, it will take a lot more than that to convince people) points him to a card he equally did not ask about. Nice try though. :rolleyes:

Its going to take more than a cursory glance of the competitions price and an inkling for anyone to believe that. ;)

I camped nowinstock for 11 days to get my RX 480 and paid $280.
Had this dealie for the 980Ti been available I'd of been all over it!

Friends Don't Let Friends purchase GTX 970 or GTX 980 in 2017.
I've tried my best to help the OP and disabuse him of his misconceptions.

People who had GTX 970s regardless of manufacturer were awarded $35 from Nvidia as compensation for having only 3.5GB of fast VRAM, instead of the advertised 4GB.
I simply cannot understand why you would still be considering anything less than a 980Ti after all the discussion.

Granted I and others may or may not agree with this but money is money, and simply frying my first ever gpu with an errant fan metal clip while PC was on (ouch) and it happened it is/was a gtx980 and if not for that I'd gladly still use it and never have gotten the ti as the replacement.

You guys have aided enough info in helping me choose a card. Even though it got a little crazy there in the middle I still appreciate everyone's efforts. Thank you for your time and I'm sure you'll see some updated hardware posts from me in the near future. Later!
