Im in big probs. I realized that my hdd is getting too old now that it might go error on me soon, but on the day i wanted to transfer my much needed docs and files frim that hdd to my external hdd, the hdd in my desktop pc died on me...

The problem is that when i try to start my pc normally (without the Windows 7 in my cd/dvd-rom), it gives me this error:

I have so far tried these things with no success:
- System repair from my Win 7 disc
- Chkdsk r/ on cmd for my Windows-partition, but it gives me the message "The type of the file system is NTFS... CHKDSK aborted." / "The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"...
- Tried this, but didnt help: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-hel...-status-0xc000000f-boot-selection-failed.html

It is a desktop pc and the hdd is the old IDE-type. I have split the hdd into 2 partitions; 1 for the windows 7 install and 1 where i have stored some random important files.

I really need to get some files from that hdd, so what can i do? Will it be enough for me to re-install Win7 over again, or?

I do not have a laptop or another pc available either..

Thanks for the tips in advance!

Then how did you access this site to create your post?

If me, I would remove that hard drive from that computer and install the drive into an enclosure or docking station attached to another computer, or into another computer as a secondary drive. Then copy off the files you do not want to lose. The more you mess with trying to restore/recover that hard drive, the greater you risk further corruption.

I use my mobile. :)

I see.. so what you are saying is that there is no longer useful for me to reinstall Windows on that same hdd?

I do not have a docking station..

Is there any other way for me to fix that hdd, or?

Thanks again.

Mine died 3 months ago, 6 years old WD Caviar Green 640 gigs and repairs are more expensive than buying a new drive.
So the same day I got a Caviar Blue 1TB.
Replace it, but first take it to a friend and mount it in a PC as a slave and see if the PC recognizes the HDD.
If it does, it may not be fully dead, you may have some bad sectors on it.
But if it doesn't, then it is truly dead and you need a replacement.
That is what I did and it is fast and easy.

You maybe able to repair some of the corruption but the truth be told, once a hard drive fails like that, it should not be trusted again because it is likely to fail again.

Your cheapest option to try is to get a USB to SATA/IDE drive adapter and attach it to another computer, then copy off your data.

Edit add: The one above does not supply power to the drive so you may need this instead.

No such thing!

The old drive interface, IDE (EIDE, PATA), supported two drives per cable. So the first was the master and the second was the slave.

The SATA drive interface only supports one drive per cable. So there is no master or slave. You just need to make sure in your BIOS, the boot order is set to the new drive first.

Thanks for that info, sir.

I apologize for the newbie Qs from me all the time but i appreciate the help.

Figured out that i do have an OLD pc with windows xp which still works like a charm, but when i opened it, i can see that both the hdd (with the windows xp on it) and the cd-rom are attached to the same IDE and power cable. Can i remove the power and ide cable from the cd-rom and attach it to the faulty hdd or? If so, how should i put pins on the hdd so it becomes slave? I have tried to put it this way, but i think it is wrong yes?

Thanks again for all the help and info.

We were all newbies once and the biggest newbie mistake is NOT asking questions. So no apologies necessary and I applaud for being wise and asking.

Wow, that label sure is not a whole lot of help, is it?

If this computer's motherboard has two IDE connectors (and most older computers do), then you can put this second drive on the second IDE connector as a Master or CS (cable select).

If the board has just 1 IDE connector, you need to look at the top of the drive and see if the label there says if this drive has 15 or 16 heads. You have it set for Slave and 16 heads. If not working, then I would try the 15 heads setting.

Note when using CS, both (if using two) drives must be set to CS and the system will sort out which is which by the location on the cable. If using Master and Slave, with 1 drive, it must be Master and located on end connector opposite the board connector. With two drives, the Slave is connected to the middle connector. The main point to remember is you cannot mix Master/Slave and CS on the same cable.

If your cable is not labeled, you will note the middle connector is off-center. As crass as this sounds, the way to remember is the master always keeps the slave close by.

I have now tried what you said, except cable select. The pc wont simply find the "defect" hdd, as you can see here:

I can put whatever option i find i the bios (primary master/slave, secondary master/slave), but it keeps telling/showing me it is an unknown device, as you can see here (it does find the hdd with the windows on it that is already in the old pc; but not the "defect" hdd im trying to add):

I also tried connecting the cable to the middle connector of the ide-cable and put the pins accordingly to slave for both 15 and 16 heads, as shown on that label, and then try the different options as mentioned above, but that didnt help either. And as you can see here, the motherboard only got 1 slot for hdd. The other one is for floppy, since it is smaller, yes?

Also, the hdd doesnt say wether it is 15 or 16 heads, does it...?

Now what do i do..? How can i make this pc bios locate the "defect" hdd i am trying to attach to the pc?

I see two, plus the smaller floppy interface to the left of the 2 IDE connectors. My guess is the other IDE ribbon cable (which you can see running behind that blue thing (pull tag?) is heading up the CD/DVD player.

I don't see the number of heads either. And plugging HDT722525DLAT80 into Google does not help either. So you may just need to try both.

Oh wow. My bad eye sight confused me on that. So yes you are absolutely spot on with that! There ARE 2 slots and yea the other one goes to the cd-rom. I can just use that cable for the hdd yeah?

Thanks for that.

Also... should i now use the master or CS jumper setting for the hdd im trying to connect..?

Good lord I don't think I've ever seen a drive with that many different jumper configurations, LOL! And it's 16 heads - the lower right parameter inside the box above the barcodes is CHS (Cylinders/Heads/Sectors).

Yes, you can unplug the optical drive and use that cable for the failing drive. Both drives should be set to master.

As I noted before, if one drive on the cable, Master or CS. You just cannot mix CS and MA/SL on the same cable. You can, however, have MA/SL on one cable and CS on the other.

Taz: good news! IT WORKED! Thanks for that.

Bill: Ah thanks for the info!

IT ALL WORKED OUT! I just haf to do what yaz and Bill wrote; connect the hdd to a different pc and run it as master and put in bios so that the secondary is master and not slave.

Now im copying everything from that hdd!

Thanks again for all the good help once again! And have some goodie holiday! :)

Glad its working!

Bill: In my experience not all (especially older) BIOS's liked CS.. It's better to just use M/S and not worry about it.

I am sooo happy for this that it's working! i even found some more veeery old IDE hdd that i want to check out what's on them...

i love it when forums actually HELP people asking for help, whether the Qs are too noobish or not. another creds to the lot who came with their inputs, especially taz and bill. :)

I know I didn't help out this time, but I just wanted to say thanks for thanking those who helped you. I know there's a ton of posts where people just disappear without a word once they fix it. :)
