Windows is really pissing me off right now. Random restarts, problems with starting and stopping services and so on. I have the hardware for Windows Xp Proffesional x64 bit edition. My question is, is it worth cleaning out the drive and switching to the 64 bit operating system? Wil i get enough driver support or should i just wait for Vista? Also if you know anything about the random restarts problem it would be a big help. My computer isnt overclocked or anything. I doubt it is my hardware because this only started happening recently and I've had this computer for a few months.

overclocked or not it could be hardware not windows and random restarts are a sign of system instability period..

your system is unstable.. weird things happening especially random restarts is simply a sign of it.. u have hardware problem not a windows one..

hmm not necessarily trog i had that prob a while back it turned out to be some viscous spyware. So what i would recommend is to do a few scans see if anything turns up. And if your hardware is OK and you cant figure it out i would just do a format or a repair on windows. Cuase you never know it could be windows.

Windows x64 does not support some 32-bit applications. Not especially wise to switch to it right now except for running certain software. At least that is my understainding. Plus you have to have an AMD Athlon 64/Opteron. Or an Intel Processor with EM64T support; or Xeon if that is your thing.

is there windows 64 spyware yet ?

eliminate the obious first, a couple of cycles of memtest86 and prime,

if they dont show any problems, windows 64bit clearly dosnt meet your needs, go back to XP 32 untill vista comes out or move to linux,

remember, windows 64bit is a beta, its not complete, i know microsoft said it would release it, but probobly they never finished it becuase the release date is too close to vista, and people wont go and buy a new version of windows 4-6 months after they just bought one,

Hey mate if you want to trouble shoot the restart problem then right click on my computer and go to propertys> Advance TAb> and start up and recovery> and unselect the box Automatic Restart.

Then either keep the small minidump setting as are for limited troubleshouting or change the small mem dump to complete and read the log that is left in the mini dump directory. You can download a program that will help you make sence of the file from the Microsoft site under Microsoft Debugging Tools. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

This should tell you what your trouble is whether its hardware or software!

Also you mentiond that you were disabling services, well unless you know what you are disabling i would leave it as default as these can cause "System stops" as well.

Good Luck
