The world's largest ship elevator has been unveiled at the Three Gorges Dam in central China.

The elevator can lift vessels up or down 370 feet in order to pass the dam across the Yangtze River in Hubei Province.

The 550ft-high structure is able to lift vessels carrying a weight of up to 3,000 tonnes.

The new elevator cuts down the time it takes to pass the dam to around 40 minutes, compared to the four hours it takes to pass via the ship lock, CCTV reported.

What a waste of time, money, and energy just to lift a ship or two. All for convenience of saving a little over 3 hours. I can see if it save 12+ hours but 3 ... no.

3000 tons is pretty light for a ship (cruise ships hit north of 100,000 for example). There must have been a lot of traffic of that class to warrant building it.

And I think the only thing that is unique about it is it carries water with it. There's bigger ship cranes out there.

It makes sense that they would build this so little ships don't have to use the locks. It increases throughput passed the dam.
