I think its bandwidth related because Intel has the same problem with the HD GPU resulting this error message if you try to add 2560x1440p60 as a custom resolution:
Finally the trick was to add 2560x1440p55. But this does not work with Nvidia (lower fps won't , too). P.S. this trick seems not to work anymore with Windows 8.1:

A dirty way to calculate the bandwith:
3840 x 2160 x 24 = 199 065 600 pixels per second
2560 x 1440 x 60 = 221 184 000 pixels per second
2560 x 1440 x 55 = 202 752 000 pixels per second
As you can see the bandwidth with the reduced framerate is nearly the same than with 4K.
