This might be a good cpu for gaming rig. Also I don't know much about Intel CPUs but isnt a 10.5 multi seem kinda low?

Intel Core 2 Duo E8700 with 3.5 GHz under way - Update: CPU pictured
On the Intel website a new dual-core CPU with Wolfdale core has been listed: The Core 2 Duo E8700 comes with 3.5 GHz.

At the Intel Ark website, which lists all CPUs and platforms, there is a new dual-core CPU with Wolfdale core listed. The Core 2 Duo E8700 is clocked to 3.5 GHz (multiplier: 10.5) and has a TDP of 65 watt. The other specifications match those of the other Wolfdale processors of the E 8xxx series: 2x 64 KiByte L1 cache, 6 MiByte L2 cache and 333 MHz QDR FSB. The CPU voltage is specified between 0.8625 and 1.2500 volt.

Prices have not been listed on the product page of the E8700, although the product status is "Launched”. But one might expect Intel to stick to their price pattern and that the E8700 will take the price position of the E8600 (currently $266). The E8600 would drop to $183 and thus reach a real cut price compared to the Phenom II series.

Update May 15, 2009
In the meantime Intel has taken the E8700 website offline. In a statement made to PC Games Hardware Intel apologized for the "incorrect entry in the list”. Intel could not comment any plans whether the announced CPU will be released or not.

Our colleagues from Computerbase now found the Core 2 Duo E8700 in a Chinese shop. There all technical specifications we mentioned above are confirmed.

It is still open when the Wolfdale CPU will be launched. Our first assumption that it might be published at the launch of AMD's AM3 CPUs turned out to be wrong.

Update: November 26, 2009
User "Fearlessleader" from the Xtremesystems Forum apparently has got a Intel Core 2 Duo E8700. He expected Core 2 Extreme QX9650 CPUs (tray) directly from the Intel chip factory in Malaysia, but it seems like there had been a mistake in the shipping procedure so that he received a Core 2 Duo E8700. A picture shows the upper side of the CPU, which isn't a engineering sample, but a retail version. The imprint on the heatspreader confirms the specifications that have been expected (3.5 GHz, 6 MiByte L2 cache, FSB1333). A CPU-Z validation is supposed to follow soon. If and when the E8700 is going to be released, is still unknown.

No, the CPU is. There was a 10.5 CPU released, but it's a Xeon.

I quote from "Movieman" of XS:

i looked and looked for an E8700, spoke to people inside In..ahh, places that should know and NO ONE had heard of one.
Now Intel did make a 10.5 multi dualcore with specs of 3500/6mb/1333 E0 stepping BUT it was for the dual socket 771 boards and it was called a X5270.
I know, I have 4 of them sitting 2ft from me..Never tried them though..

can't say whether the e8700 is real or not, but I can say a 10.5 multi is quite high for a core2 CPU

10.5 might be less than the E7500 etc.

But the (if existent) E8700 runs 400+ FSB easily though. My old E8600 could do 4GHz @ 1.2v, so this will do it at less.

They said the print was on the tape over the chip.

Up to you whether you believe it's real or not... I think it's fake though.

Meh. The photo is more than likely fake. But I am leaning this was a Xeon as already stated. I just wonder why its coming back up on a gaming site now.

Fail news reporters?

Maybe some tool decided to google randomly, or someone was joking with him.

So lets salvage the thread.

I'm curious. According to BarbaricSoul a 10.5 multi is high on a Intel chip? I ask because on an AMD a 15+ multi is normal.

Yeah, there are intel core2 chips with multi of 11, but the vast majority of core2 chips have a multi of 8-9. My q9650 has a multi of 9, while the q9550 has a multi of 8.5, the e8400 I had had a multi of 9 also. The q6600 only has a multi of 8 I believe. The e8500 has 9.5 and the e8600 has a multi of 10 to my understanding.

Wow with such low multis I wonder why the do not overclock better. Do they run hotter than AMDs or something?
