NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Fermi

How did other sites mange the same task?

they do it because

1. they dont run as many tests

2. they dont get as many cards. just because we dont have the toxic or atomic or XFX card etc up doesnt mean he doesnt already have it.

3. they will get the new drivers up in a later review. these ones were obviously done first. what you think w1zz got his card yesterday?

4. seriously STFU if you dont know what your talking about. go get some hardware to review then come back and talk to the adults when you have a clue. and not just jumping on some band wagon. what does it matter anyway? are you actually going to buy one? and if you are what do the drivers matter? go download the new ones problem solved.

If you are a fps crazed fanatic then this is the card for you. It manages to beat the 5970 in some cases! And we all know that 1GPU solutions provide a more stable gameplay and a better overall experience than Sli/CFX :p

i might of overlooked it but i didnt see a single bench were it beat the 5970

thanks for the thorough review Wizz, I appreciate it.

As for Fermi's performance, I'm happy I went from nvidia to ATI and got a 5870 with all things considered

I am so confused, why is everyone getting annoyed with people who have criticized ?

You post something publically expect criticism. I do at any rate. That way I'm pleasantly surprised when I get none.

Having read the entire thread I have to say no one was "harsh" harsh would of been to call W1zz names, pointing out what we perceive as a flaw in a review is not calling names ;)

Anywhom the main fact of the matter is that the cards should be compared to how cards perform now.

That's all people had an issue with.

Not harsh, not wrong.

An opinion which people are perfectly within grounds to have and to talk about.

No sorry from me :p

Nothing more to say about the GPU or the review mind you so won't be checking the thread again, so PM me if you wanna reply :p

Oh i see it was metro 2033. the only reason it got such better frames is the heavy physx that game uses. if you notice the ATI cards are at the bottom of the list mostly cause of that issue.

To compare this game on a nvidia card to a ATI without physx, i used a 9600GT with this game and got around 20-30FPS with 1600x1200res 4AA all gfx on medium. well same test with my new 5850 and it got almost the same result will the 5850 by 5 FPS.

is there any other bench that the 480 beats the 5970 beside metro 2033?

BTW

YOU ROCK W1ZZ!!!!!!

The noise on that thing is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to be deafened every time I load up a pretty game.

let me tell ya dude if it gets into the 90's like that rooms are going to get hot. my GX2's did and that will bake a room

I already have the morning sun into my room, that and one of these would actually start boiling me alive.

its in the 90's in a 71F environment.

I usually keep my house at about 77f if I want to have any extra money to spend after the power bill comes in.

My ol gtx 275 used to make my room 3-4F more than the rest of the house... if the house is 77.. my room was fucking 80. unacceptable.

it even caused my window AC at the old house to condensate all over the floor everytime i turned my pc on.

play with these hot ass cards all you want.. might lose a few pounds too.

96 degrees Celsius = 204.8 degrees Fahrenheit

with a hair dryer pumping heat into your room @ 50dbA AWESOME!

W1zzard,

You are a good guy with good reviewing skills and known for one of the most influential and trusted utilities on GPUs. When enthusiasts think GPU they think GPU-z, W1zzard, and TechPowerUp among other things not directly associated to your site. People trust you and your opinion to make purchases with fairly large amounts of money. That is power that you don't directly see although it reaches a far greater scope than just this forum. You are respected across the internet. If that power and fame isn't enough to keep going with reviews then stop reviewing. I just want you to enjoy life. Whatever that takes, do it. Life is too short to do it any other way. :toast:

Damn it DaedalusHelios I NEED W1zz reviews. Don't be telling him to be all happy and shit.

W1zz as the ban stick dummy I command you to keep reviewing and beating me. If you close the site where will I go? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

its true im 12 and what is this? if i dont get reviews ill refuse to eat cheerios get beat by my rents and kill myself

That game is optimized for nvidia and also it uses phisics on the GPU not CPU. Completely irrelevant! Just like when testing Batman:A.A. with that $hit on.

Love that 7970 pic in your sig! Damn if that XFX custom 5970 coming out doens't make one wonder..

Great review as always. I especially like the "Performance per Dollar/Watt", TPU is the only site that provides that.

The GTX480 wasn't bad at all in performance and price, both exactly between the 5870/5970. But it's a big pile of steaming fail in thermal performance, that is power consumption, noise and temps. Consumes power like crazy, more than a 5970. And the temps the card is putting out is in no way acceptable. A card should never go beyond 90 degrees, even with Furmark. Not mentioning normal load, like games or Vantage. The fan is noisy too, even though it doesn't cool the card properly.

And Nvidia has had time to tinker and tweek the card, 6 months to be exact, so I did expect these issues to be some what solved. Makes me think that either the Fermi wasn't even half-done when ATI came out with the 5000-series, or Nvidia has been lazy OR the Fermi-architecture is just too big and hot. Try again Nvidia.

performance crown still goes to AMD at the moment... the card is terribly dissapointing when you consider how long nvidia has taken with it. Not really their fault, more like TSMC's fault. I don't think nvidia even contemplated that that silicon would run so hot.

They dont really need this card to sell however since they're making more money with tegra and other lines (hint: the cockroach GPU).

So I gotta ask - should we expect a 470 review soon?

Considering we've reached 40C for most of the week (and summer's just starting!) I wonder if you can only use Fermi in watercooled setups, or with aftermarket coolers, and an air-conditioned room, in this type of weather...

great review wizz:respect: now after reading this im glad i got my 5970 now:rockout::rockout:

Kinda disappointing performance. Can they make the dual GPU version of this with such high power draw and heat output?

yes, that's why i'm quitting, seems i'm not the right person to do this

Cry me a river ..

Don't be so dramatic, there is a mistake, a huge one, but is the first i read here.

Recognize the mistkae and fix it, not justo for me, for all users and web readers that you have through time.

Using Catalyst 9.12 is not a mistake, not a flaw, nothing there to fix.

Why don't you quit dragging this out?
I see no 'mistake' either, just a dam good, informative, and in-depth review.

Don't you think W1z would have used 10.3 had he wanted to?
