Final Fantasy 7 - One small step for Japan, one giant leap for RPGs.
Chronotrigger - Amazing story lines (plural).
Grand Theft Auto 3 (and forward) - Wow...the world is my sandbox to destroy.

Plenty of good games...and way too many that stick out i will narrow it down the ones i probably do/still would play today...

1) Metroid (NES - even though i've played every, non had an impact on me like the one that started it all)
2) Max Payne 2 (played it on the PS2 when it came out now i own it on the PC)
3) Black & White (the 1st one not the second...I was obsessed - PC)
4) City of Heroes/Villains (PC)
5) All Zelda games fall into this #

There are so many honorable mentions though….there have been TONS of good games released over the years.

OMG I'm glad more people are putting Morrowind instead of Oblivion in that list. Oblivion is a great game (I've been replaying it for the last couple weeks btw, for the 5th time), but Morrowind was so much better in so many ways that I can only think one situation where someone would pick Oblivion as the best Elder Scrolles game: he is too young to have played Morrowind. On the same premise I could understand someone picking Daggerfall as the best TES game, but its numerous bugs and repetitive dungeons make it the third TES game IMO.

That being said my top 5 list without genre restrictions is this:

1- Half-Life 1&2 (can't really pick one)
2- TES:Morrowind
3- X3 Reunion/Terran conflict (same, can't decide which one is better)
4- Rome: Total War
5- Crysis
