8800 GTX 768MB Still capable?

My little bro is getting into gaming and our parents got him his own computer for christmas.

It is a decent PC with an i3 560 and 6GB of RAM.

Anyway I found a used 8800 GTX 768MB for sale at a local PC shop for $40.

The shop guarantees it for 30 days so I'm not worried about it not working.

But will the 8800 GTX still handle modern games?

The monitor that came with the system was a 19" with a resolution of 1366x768 will the 8800 GTX handle that resolution?

There aren't really a whole lot of modern reviews that feature this card.

I'm thinking of getting it for my bro for a birthday present since his birthday is Jan. 9th.

For that res I think its good, the price is also pretty fair. As long as the PSU in the computer can run it, I think you are set (a good 400-450w PSU should be fine).

If you could stretch the budget a used 450 GTS would be a great modern DX11 card.

tbh the 8800GTX should handle it fine even though its outdated, but 40$ is still a great deal, I'd pay that for one guarantted for 30 days.

1366x768 sounds perfect for that car nowdays too, just make sure the PSU is a good brand name unit over 450W, corsair, seasonic, antec, enermax, there are many more good ones too.

a few points.

1. they're good for DX9 games. DX10 performance is a bit lacking for todays games.

2. they use a lot of power and put out a lot of heat, compared to modern cards - especially at idle.

3. some features are broken/missing. No H264 decoding, no HDMI audio


1366x768 is a perfect res for an older gen card - the GTX will run perfectly fine at that res.

It will be absolutely fine. There have been very few modern games i haven't
been able to play on max settings at 1920x1200 with 30+ FPS. Plus these cards live forever!

now THAT is a joke. they've actually got a pretty high failure rate due to overheating.

the only reason my one is still alive, is the massive thermalright cooler + 120mm fan - every single G80 card i know of that was on the stock cooler, is dead. not a single one is left alive that i know of in all my friends machines.

Maybe i just got lucky then? Mine runs cooler with the stock than with an HR-03plus (Doesnt go above 70c in the summer, under full load, 24/7 folding). Your right mussels, they do fail if not properly cooled. OP, i still think its a decent cheap card, But your probably better off getting something newer

i got a HD4850 for 40 shipped last week

but i also got a 8800GTX there alright but there hot cuz they run at like 1.25-1.3v stock

To be honest i have no idea. I'm assuming that's $40USD, which is about what they are going for 2nd hand here with no guarantee. Maybe with an actual budget we could find something?

There are people on overclock.net and sometimes here selling 4850s and 9800GTXs for ~$50-$60. I think that's a better deal imo due to less energy usage, slightly better performance, and runs less hot.

shipping rates, warranty issues, etc. The 8800gtx is not far from the performance, is readily available at his local shop for pickup, and has 30 day warranty. Whereas people sometimes on the net would say 'not my fault, you have bad psu' if the card would fail anytime.

i would make sure the power supply is at least a 450 min. i just popped a 420watter the 8800gtx smoked the 420 now i'm running a 465.the 8800gtx calls for a 430 watt if you run anything lower it's not good

Im sorry to say this but the 8800 cards tends to die quick make sure you have proper cooling in that case

There isn't really a budget I had in mind.

This is kind of a spur of the moment type of thing that I just happen to come across at a local shop.

His birthday is Sunday so I don't have time to order something online or buy from someone online second hand.

I went ahead an got it for him.

I gave my buddy my old 8800 Ultra (which is a GTX OCed) and it will play BC2 on medium at about 30-40FPS but he has a Phenom I 9850 Quad with 4GB of ram

I just recently replaced my 3 1/2 year old 8800 GTX. It was a very capable card @ 1680x1050. For $40 used I think it would be a good purchase for the PC and resolution you stated. As others have said, they do put out a good amount of heat. I really noticed a difference in my little home office room where I keep the PC. The 8800 GTX doesn't downclock at idle and it produced quite a bit of heat at all times. I got my GTX 460 in September while it was still warm out and I was shocked at the difference in the room's temperature.

I still have the card - doubt I'll every get rid of it. I put an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 8800 on it and have a good OC (648 Mhz). Max temp in gaming was only 60F (Idled at 44C). As long as they're kept cool they seem to run forever.

The card can easily play games at that resolution. My brother is using a GTS 250 with i3 and 2GB Ram and all of the games run pretty smooth expect the heavy titles like Metro2033, Just Cause 2 and Crysis.

You just need to lower some detail down otherwise that card for 40$ is a great deal.
