Hi all

I have purchased from my friend a Faulty GTS 250 = 6$ ... it has artifacts problem.
The oven mode was good idea in my knowledge, because i have did it before with successful.

** Oven War
after 5~7min I hear bullets in my oven, "Oh God what's going on!!!!" . The sound was like " dragunov " and " pistol " wow I love it :) . So I found that was capacitor. That was really mess.

Uh, there is some parts I don't know where they come from, maybe they're alien :wtf:

now I am looking to buy some capacitors, but I have no Idea about what kind of capacitors that fit my GPU. I have check E-bay, but there are thousand of this things. :banghead: .
here is some photo:

My Q is

- How do I know a capacitor? I mean that fit my GPU? what should to know ?
- In Photo 4: is it possible to soldering that parts?
- How do I know where is negative (-) or positive (+) ? How do I know the right direction to put the parts ?
- Is it worth to fix ?

I appreciate any kind of help.
obs sorry for bad english, I do my best.

Is it worth it to fix? Probably not
There's a fella on these forums who is a wizzard with capacitors and replacing them. I don't remember his name, but hopefully someone else can drop into this thread and remind me ;)

- Voltage and capacitance (μF)
- It is possible but it's not easy to get the specs for the small SMD ones (well at least I had a hard time), soldering them isn't hard only time consuming since you need to be accurate
- The capacitors have ones side of them coloured (like in photo 6) and the other blank, (coloured is + of course)
- No, you payed $6 for the card, and I'm guessing you will pay more for these parts since it's all small quantities. Just find a cheap used card and replace it.

I've baked a lot of cards but never had "fireworks" like you had :D, next time maybe try a lower temp? :)
Shouldn't be that difficult to fix, you could try finding the parts you need on a donor card(one that's dead and can't be fixed).

Use a heat gun. Some parts should not be heated

Why the hell people put their graphic cards into oven?

Common fix for 8800 cards with artifacts was to oven bake, to melt the solder back into place. Worked most of the time. 375 degrees farenheit for around 5-10 mins was the general practice.

trodas I think is the chap that resolders caps etc. on all kinds of things. He should be able to assist. Pop him a PM.

IMHO I agree with RCoon, probably not worth rescuing that card. If it was me, I would call it and move on.

Never had that card so I guess im not going to need it soon. But thx :P

Common fix for some laptops too.

Looks like you had too much heat there.

sounds like the heat was way too high, i gotta admit i fell over laughing at this one at the bullet comparisons.

Its called a reflow. They actually have expencive machines that do this. Baking them is really not the best way. With the temps constently goin up and down around a chip the solder cracks. Both on motherboad and GPUs

uh good sound . So you know that capacitance. pls can you give me link in E-bay that match GPU capacitance

Is it possible to use hot air gun to re-soldering small part ?
What is this thing : http://ziddique.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/smdcap.jpg and How this can be soldering ? it's looks like chocolate
It's good idea to try fix it, That to get experiment.

I have no idea about Temp. That is old cook oven. It was only 5~7 min before war start. It's really scared me when heard that sound.
There is no physical damage in GPU board . So I think its need some capacitance +soldering .

10+..... I am looking to buy one soon, like this HotGun

for dinner :) >> That what happen to me
I have fix my 9800GT by oven mode. But this one i have no idea. it's booooO_Ooooom

There is an easier way than the oven-

Get an old intel cooler with the copper bit in the middle
Cut out the copper bit
Place the copper bit in the oven at 250c for half an hour
Take the copper bit out of the oven
Place copper bit on top of the GPU on the card
Leave it on till its cool and take it off

The card should now work.

I have done this with a xbox 360 and a laptop and it worked fine

when I take the copper out of the oven it will be loss temperature immediately.

thanks god I am not try to put my HD 6790 in oven. That will be killer.

yeah, I have burnt my cake ^_^

When i did it, it does not cool down immediatly, copper hols heat quite a long time, you take it out of the oven and put your fingers on it, you will get burnt.

I have done it twice and it works, and it does not melt anything else like it does putting the whole card in the oven

that actually sounds like a pretty good technique, unlike a heat gun it cools down more gradually and should be more effective. i like it.

Try it, it does work, you have to use pliers to take it out of the oven and place it on the card though.

I'll be getting an intel stock cooler with my processor tomorrow, how does one go about removing the copper core?

oven mode: i have no fingers

I have baked my original release PS3 Phat's board 5 times now. She just keeps coming back. It can be done but has to be done right.
