It is their "Mystery Deal" thing. When you search for SSDs it actually says the price of this drive is $140, when you click on it the price magically drops to $125, and if you happen to get their flyers in the mail with the promo-code you get the extra $5. I guess the extra $5 off is an incentive to read their emails. I'm not going to complain.

It's a very good drive. I have 2 of them in the household. Their write speed is nothing to get excited about at the 240GB size, but Read speeds are very good, and slightly better than the M4's. They are middle of the pack (which is not a bad place to be), and a great value, especially with this offer! I got the two a few months ago hoping they will reach the reliability that M4's had.

My fiance just did that two days ago with an M500. And even just being average on speed, she thought she had a brand new laptop compared to her 5400 rpm drive! And let's face it, even the difference between best and worst SSD's is basically mentioned in mileconds to a second or two, so an average user should definately make use of a great deal like this.

I just ordered mine from Amazon Prime. They sniffed out the deal and matched NE's $125 pricemark, sans the $5 promo code. This will be my first experience with a SSD and I am looking forward to it! Anyone recommend some free, good HDD cloning software?

Acronis True Image (I think that's the name...I'm at work) works well with the M500 and the M4 both. I'm sure you already know, but I just wanted to caution that clean install is the best route to take though. Enjoy your SSD!

Thanks mate. I wanted to do a fresh install. I have the disc at home... Is it as simple as uninstalling on my current drive and then installing on the new SSD? If I uninstall, all my data on my current drive will still be kept for me to transfer over at my will, once the new OS is on the SSD? The data drive will just be unusable because it doesn't have an OS, but still will be able to transfer/hold data? I have never done this before so IDK how it exactly works.

Yes, do you have another drive you can transfer the data to? If so, it will be no trouble to have all that data available to you once you do a fresh install onto ssd of the OS.

EDIT: In fact, if you can move your libraries' content locations to that other drive now, you can re-identify that data to your libraries again after fresh install onto SSD. You can then keep it that way, as it will limit writes to the ssd (which is a good thing).

My dad has one or two spare HDDs at home I can plug into mine to transfer data. Wondering why I can't just uninstall the OS on my current drive and keep all the data where it is. Then install OS onto SSD, then plug into the former HDD with all the data and transfer over what I want? Sorry, I'm pretty unfamiliar with transfering data from one to another HDD, and especially with SSDs.

Honestly jed, i have never done it that way. I've always been worried the system would try to boot from the old hdd, lol. Someone here may be able to give a better answer. On the face of it, it probably would work. Even so, I am of the school that with SSD's at least, you should keep the data in your libraries separate from the SSD and OS, since it sounds like you are wanting to put it all back in with your OS.

BUT...I could be wrong, and my way of thinking may be outdated. Can anyone else here advise on this?

Basically what I want to do is transfer powerhouse games to the SSD, along with the OS. I would keep vids, downloads, pics, music, etc. (about 100 G worth) on the other 1 TB drive. Also games that aren't powerhouse or I don't play as much would stay on the 1 TB drive. If there is room, I would bring Steam over, but that takes about 150 GB (unless you can 'partition' Steam games - install powerhouse games on the SSD and lighter games on the 1 TB drive?).

Thanks for the info, and I agree, the risk is there. Having a clean OS install and a surefire guarantee that your data won't be messed with would be good!

I am going to my dad's this weekend to collect the spare HDD. I will most likely do as you suggested in transfering my files to that HDD, formatting the original, and then installing a fresh Win 7 on my SSD! I will post back with results if I remember to.

Steam now gives you the option of install location so you can install certain in different locations.

A clean install will do you right. Install windows onto your ssd while the ssd is the only drive plugged in (sorry if this has been said already) and after that plug in the other hdd.

Thanks Mano. IIRC, Win7 works like this: uninstall from current HDD before you can install on a new HDD/SSD. So I would uninstall my Win7 from current HDD when ready to install SSD. Install OS on the SSD (after HDD is unplugged) and get it running. Then, plug in the HDD and transfer whichever files I choose back over to the new SSD?

Take a quick gander and see if this is what you're talking about because I'm not sure what you really mean by uninstalling the OS.

Oh, I thought it was more complicated than that. I was under the impression that Windows allowed you to reinstall OS as many times as you like, as long as it's only detected on one computer at a time. I have the disc, so I guess it will be as easy as installing the OS on SSD, backing main HDD up to another HDD and then formatting/transfering?

Also, random Q. Do you think my Gigabyte 990 UD3 has all cables necessary to connect the SSD? Also my HDD to the SSD when ready? Or should I get a list of things I need to pick up before I begin the fun?

I'm not sure of your copy of Windows, but assuming you have the cdkey, you should be good to go. After (or perhaps during) installing Windows, you'll need to enter your cdkey.

There is a chance that you may have to call MS to activate your new windows installation. It's like a 5-10 minute automated call that asks for a few things and then gives you a series of numbers you need to type in to then activate your Windows installation. I just did it a couple of weeks ago for my bro's build with Win 7, and it went perfectly fine, as well as a few months ago for me with Win 8.

Awesome and good info. I have the key and CD and all is well. I believe I have only installed it once, on my current PC, so there should be no issues. If there is, sounds like a 5-10 min call is all there is. I will update around Sat/Sun with results!

That's kind of what I was trying to suggest earlier. Save all of the data you want to another HDD, disconnect all HDD, then install Windows from your disc onto the SSD, then attach the "new" data drive you just made and voila, you've got a fresh OS on SSD that stores all the data in it's libraries on another HDD. Finally, if you still want to use the HDD you are using for OS right now, just format it after, and you will have another HDD available to you. Be aware, formatting will wipe it out, so make sure you've got all the data you want off it before doing that format.

If you've got SATA cables, you are all set. Each one will connect directly to the motherboard from each SSD/HDD separately. Just read your motherboard manual, and see which SATA ports on your motherboard are fastest, or preferred for the operating system (such as SATA1 or SATA2, e.g.
