Greetings everyone,
I am thinking about picking up an older workstation to use for some virtualization. I have about 4 choices at the moment. Ideally I would like to stay under $300.
The first and cheapest option is a Dell T3500 with a Xeon X5670 6C/12T @ 2.93ghz for about $200USD.
The second option is a HP Z600 with 2 x Xeon X5647 (or 5667) 8C/16T @ 2.8ghz (or 2.93ghz) for between $250-300 USD.
The third option is an HP Z420 with a Xeon E5-2680 8C/16T @ 2.8ghz for about $300USD.
The 4th option and the most expensive is the HP Z600 with eon X5670 12C/24T @ 2.93ghz for around $350. However, the second X5670 wouldn't be added until at least next month.
Realistically I may have 4 vms going at once with a server or two and maybe two desktops. This is really just for a lab and to experiment and have fun with. No serious work will likely be done on it. What do guys think? Which would you choose? There is also the 5th option of Zen in October but I don't really want to wait that long and I am expecting prices well above $350 to get the components I will need.
