A general thread about gamepads

Didn't see one with a quick look, I apologize if there is one.

Anyway, do you people have a controller with your PC? Personally I have a Xbox One (S) gamepad and it's my favourite gamepad ever. Been a gamer since the early 90s and this just feels perfect in my hands. The older X360 controller was already great but its D-pad sucked.

And which controllers you like overall? Dualshock 2 and 3 are also fine when playing older console games, though DS3's triggers suck.

Heh, I bought a wired 360 pad in 2014, I'd still use it but its wire had contact problems, then I bought the One controller. The first one broke after exactly an year (RB button died), I got new from RMA and this has worked over 3 years now.

first one with pc was logitech wingpad that was awfull.
since i have the logitech f310 which is cheap and has the switch for direct input and xinput all is well.
like in gta5 flying driving with controller and shooting with mouse.

I use my PS4 controller and my kid uses his One S controller. But I mostly just use kb+m..

Around 2014 I bought a wireless xbox360 gamepad, still using it.

I had one of these.... I lent it to a friend and i never saw it again. But thats fine... Because a few years later I borrowed a xbox360 controller off him and he never saw that again either.

I used to run a Saitek P880 controller --- and i still have that in a box somewhere but i dont really need to use it since most games support the xbox controller anyway and the xbox controller is wireless.



(For the record -- he is an extremely good friend of mine so it wasnt a complete tit for tat measure. He knows i have it but just doesnt care because he sold his xbox360 some 20 years ago)

My first gamepad for PC was a Logitech F310, back in 2007. Damn thing is STILL kickin to this day, but I only use it when playing emulators. My "daily driver" is a Razer Wolverine Ultimate. I've owned it a bit over a year. The B button font is completely gone lol.

Xbox Elite V1 I absolutely love it. This is from someone who’s only ever owned Playstations.

I have a Xbox 360 knock off from Aliexpress but its surprisingly well made, no cracking noises and so far it worked with every single game I tried with.
Actually its not even mine, my bro bought it a few years ago he just never use it so I took it in case I play some fighting game or a walking simulator every now and then. 'those are the only games I'm willing to use a controller with'

Other than that nada, not a big fan of them to be honest.

I had a Xbox Elite V1 which ended up against a wall after a FIFA match, then i bought a Xbox one which ended up like the previous Elite V1, after that bought a Xbox Elite 2 ( which i still have ) + a cheap Logitech F310 ( to play FIFA ) and in December 2020 i bought a Xbox one.

Also I have to say that I have two pirate Dualshock3s, one is for HTPC (a cute pink one!) and one (a blue one) is for laptop (playstation 1 emulator ) and they work just great with SCPToolkit drivers perfect Xinput compatibility etc.

I've been using XB360 pads on PC since buying an XB360. Whilst it's true that the d-pad sucks, if you need digital input then use the keyboard! I know the XBOne d-pad is better and many people find it more comfortable than the XB360 pad, but I prefer the feel of the older pad. Also, I have four XB360 pads for local split-screen stuff and honestly can't be arsed with mixing and matching wireless dongles, so there's an incentive to keep with XB360 pads until they die.

I started gamepadding on a Sega Megadrive, and the gamepad I had until the XB360 was a Gravis Eliminator Aftershock:

The pad was actually pretty decent and given that it's 22 years old, the ergonomics are pretty much bang on but software and drivers have come a long way since then!

The thing that made me stick with Microsoft pads is that so many games just expect an XBOX controller and start working with the expected button config automatically, even having the right icons, OSD cues, controller art in-game etc. It's nice to have a game just work perfectly with a controller right away without even visiting the button mapping page.

Borrowing PS Dual Shock and a couple of other 3rd-party pads in the intervening years has only reinforced my belief that you want an XBOX pad on Windows unless you hate the ergonomics so much that you're willing to give up the convenience of having the pad games expect you to be using.

Whatever you do, do NOT get the xbox one Elite controller. It has a terrible issue where sometimes the A button presses dont register. It drives me batshit insane! I put in an RMA request and the replacement had the EXACT same problem! So I put in another RMA and got another replacement, Guess what? SAME PROBLEM! Microsoft what the hell, this is a $200 dollar controller! How could they have such a glaring defect? If you google this issue, you will see it's very common.

Just the regular Xbox controller. Buying the Wireless Adapter fixed every gripe I had about it (Bluetooth lag at range, Bluetooth connectivity issues). I kinda wish I could have gotten the new version, but the current version with USB-C and hybrid D-pad wasn't out yet.

Bought a 12-pack of batteries as my Chinese ripoff battery pack gives anymore maybe a hour of game time, and I like playing wireless. I don't have any lag even with a 2EUR ebay BT dongle

What's wrong with just getting Eneloop?

Energizer and Amazon Basics are also pretty good ever since they went to the low self-discharge design. Eneloop did it first though.
