What are you playing?

Horizon Forbidden West 8k - let's goooo !!!

So, judging from the stats it runs smooth, right?

Yep, like butter - at lower res it should run good on any hardware, especially with dlss. It is quite a bit more demanding than the previous game, with its much more dense foilage etc, but again not really an issue if you just pop on dlss.

Except for the metal dinosaurs that don't make sense. :D

I will take it that you didn't play the first game - story explains everything ;)

Oh I've brought it up before, and I'm well aware they try to explain it away in the game. To me the aesthetics of what they wear and the rugged ancient look of the world don't mesh well with high tech machine beasts though. I've also had more than one person whom played the game say they feel the same way about it. I'm not a big fan of games with settings that have an odd mix of things, with a bizarre story that does a poor job at trying to make sense of it.

Dude, either play the game, or read the story - it makes 100% sense. And cba to discuess it any further.

Also joining in with Forbidden West. :)
Seems to run well enough even on my system with near max settings + DLSS Quality. 'might tweak it a bit further but for now this is fine with me'

I can also second that yes the story and the setting does make sense based on the first game, its actually one thing I loved about the first game cause I found it interesting.

I can understand why to some it may seem a bit disjointed but I really enjoyed the first game and am def getting this one if only because they are a bit different.

The aforementioned video then.

One MAJOR drawback to forbidden west is that they completely changed all the controls on pc... and the new ones SUCK ! Using weapon wheel in combat is so facking buggy, and you can't remap it to tab, like it was in zero dawn - tab always opens the map eventhough tab was never assigned to map in keybindings ! Has been so frustrating...

Generally all the controls both in gameplay and in the menus screams the fact that it's a console game, and that the controls are VERY undercooked in this pc port (like you can't navigate the skill menu at all, except for just click acquire, and first then do you get to see what it does...)

Massive downgrade over zero dawn in this regard.

Edit : and what's up with that constant sh1tty hero lighting ?! Another downgrade over zero dawn...

It's been a while since we did this as accurate:

I guess in a way I'm lucky that I've played the first game like 2+ years ago so I've forgot the controls/keys anyway so the Forbidden ones feel normal to me now.
That and I don't always use weapon wheels in games to switch weapons rather the button/number allocated for the weapon or using the mouse scroll wheel.

Whats a hero lighting?

Even so, the new controls are just way less intuitive... like, F for weapons wheel?! And even if you try to change the keybind, it stays the same -_-

Hero lighting means that alloy is always getting artificially lit up - notice how she is always glowing, especially her hair? That's the hero lighting...

Ah that, yea its noticeable during cutscenes but during gameplay it looks good to me.
Tab is indeed defaults to map even if its changed and M is also set to map which is what I use in most games anyway. 'it is a weird decision that I agree'

Anyway I've tweaked some stuff for more stability on my system and for some extra headroom.
Turned down Textures to High from Very High since after a while it can fill up over time and drop the performance gradually. 'no big deal, I would need to pixel peep to notice any difference'
Shadows seems to be the biggest hit, going from V.High/High to medium is ~10 FPS difference for me which was okay at the start of the game but the more foliage dense areas were a bit problematic so I've settled with medium. 'think that was maybe used on consoles too? Dunno will have to wait for DigitalFoundry's in depth performance video for that'
Forbidden3.jpg

Well I wont be complaining about how the game looks thats for sure, to me its really pretty so now all there is left is to enjoy the game.:) 'possibly it will take me like a month to finish it..'
Btw I do disable the stats overaly while playing after I'm done tweaking my settings, don't like that distracting my view/immersion.

It looks fine during gameplay hen she has direct sunlight on her, but when she doesn't, she glows like this

And i find that shadow quality is the only setting with a big impact on performance aswell, aside of resolution ofc.

Edit :

Btw found this an interesting comparison of the same place in the old and new game

And I'm sucked in too. The port runs indeed marvelous, although I'll need to change some settings (currently auto).

So far only the controls are whack. Luckily I'll just map them on my G600.

I've already been filled in on what most feel is the part that's supposed to justify it, and fact checked it. I still don't feel it fits. And I don't care to "discuess" (funny spelling) it with those whom can't accept opinions of others on the subject, so I dgaf if you want to or not. It's clear to me you primarily look for games you can show off your 4090 rig with, and will accept just about anything story or content wise they have. Color me not impressed.

You would never say that this is a 2014 game running on a GTX 1070..

Visually the upgrade that i noticed the most was by far the animals - they looked very bad in HZD, but here they look very nice, especially in motion.

Edit : imgur keeps changing that specific screenshot to 5k no matter what i do, for some reason....

Im inclined to agree when it comes to the story of it. Its pretty weak, but action games arent exactly known for bestseller storytelling. While the gameplay is quite good and very much does 'work and match' the setting, purely visually its just mostly weird and its not directly an immersive quality of the game.. The immersion does happen while actively hunting though; thats really how its supposed to 'connect' I think. Also the game visuals do avoid the pitfall of being generic and soulless which so many games are; shiny, but soulless. I do think the world and Aloy have character, soul to it.
