Im not at that stage yet... but what would you guys do when you know you are nearing the end of your life?
Will you pass on your steam account or will you close it?

I would give my account away. Change the mail adress to the person who you know who wants it...

so many launchers. there will be a last login at some point. if I remain logged who knows, the person who gets ahold of my PC decides or I could program it to self destruct after a period of inactivity.

I think of it like this. whoever gets into my room/house has access to everything.

I dont have any material/digital attachments.

I like to think when the rapture happens someone will get a goldmine of tech/games basically from me.

Just leave a text file with passwords in it on desktop.

I've sort-of been planning ahead, even though i'm only in my mid-30s (although I am a bit unhealthy). I've been documenting a lot of my personal life on an internal wiki of sorts and all of my accounts and important details are in a Keepass database.

The idea being that when it's finally time for me to meet my maker I can pass my next of kin a password vault and a book of info they might need to tie off any loose ends. Having recently gone through a loss where things weren't as well prepared has reinforced my decision. Trying to sort out affairs while grieving is hard enough as it is.

Do you have a defitive date of death? No? So why closing it. The death is not clearly defined on date and time as long as you don't face the execution of a death penalty. And even those are fighting each day for their life at every sigle day. An german proverb says: "Those who are said to die fast live much longer". I don't understand why everybody say it's one's fate instead of not accepting the fate at all. Your fate isn't written, Doctors are wrong,... It's on you to define and decide about your way and when it ends.

I believe a person should definitely take action for all its possessions before that. Leaving stuff unresolved to family/friends, ain't right in my mind. What the Swedish call: Swedish death cleaning.

If you believe gaming is good/useful/positive experience, pass on the account. If you feel gaming wasn't worth it/ain't right/loss of time/talent/etc, then don't pass "this menace" to another person and let the account be closed. Your call, but you carry responsibility for it. Personally, I'd go with the later...I mean spending your cash and time on those games was your choice. Let someone else makes theirs.

Umm that is not what I was implying…

the question is what will you do with your steam account when you are close of passing away… would you close the account or give it to your children

In that specific scenario I would give it to a friend if I still have some left who might be interested or their childs, etc. 'I don't really plan on having one so I most likely wont have any direct relative to pass my accounts to'
Its like when I've quited an MMO I was playing for ~7 years, I gave all of my remaining gold/whatever else tradeable worthy stuff to my last friend who was still playing the game at the time.

i would probably do the same as you, and hopefully pass it on to my son/stepson, along with the PC if its worth having at the time.
be a shame to waste the dozens of games i have.

You would be affecting their lives by suggesting it's a good idea to play games even if they're already addicted. besides those games are very likely old and no longer supported. better let them rest forever.

How can you know that you reach your life's end? Do you end your life with a suicide? Do you await your execution? Exactly. Nobody knows if his own life ends at a certain day except those two cases.

Also think of subscription based paid software/apps...

For my little brothers. Would be a shame to let a currently ~7500EUR valued account to just rot on the void. :D

I wouldn't bother doing anything with my Steam account, I have 2 daughters who are 39 and 32, they have no interest in PC's/Gaming, my 16 year old granddaughter only plays occasionally a couple of free Android games on her phone, apart from that if I am around after my wife, when I go they will have plenty of money to buy games if they so wish. On top of all that, I am kinda hoping that by the time I go my games library will be so old the games won't run on whatever hardware is out there at that time :)

Please bury me with my shameful backlog.

Yeah, I would pass it on, there's a lot of value in there, its up to who gets it what to do with that. I'm not too philosophical about death, I think, at this moment in my life, but rather practical and pragmatic.

It's not your stuff to give away.

Steam and your Subscription(s) require the download and installation of Content and Services onto your computer. Valve hereby grants, and you accept, a non-exclusive license and right, to use the Content and Services for your personal, non-commercial use (except where commercial use is expressly allowed herein or in the applicable Subscription Terms). This license ends upon termination of (a) this Agreement or (b) a Subscription that includes the license. The Content and Services are licensed, not sold. Valve is not responsible for the use of your password and Account or for all of the communication and activity on Steam that results from use of your login name and password by you, or by any person to whom you may have intentionally or by negligence disclosed your login and/or password in violation of this confidentiality provision. Unless it results from Valve’s negligence or fault, Valve is not responsible for the use of your Account by a person who fraudulently used your login and password without your permission. If you believe that the confidentiality of your login and/or password may have been compromised, you must notify Valve via the support form (https://support.steampowered.com/newticket.php) without any delay.

F. Ownership of Content and Services

All title, ownership rights and intellectual property rights in and to the Content and Services and any and all copies thereof, are owned by Valve and/or its or its affiliates’ licensors. All rights are reserved, except as expressly stated herein. The Content and Services are protected by copyright laws, international copyright treaties and conventions and other laws. You are entitled to use the Content and Services for your own personal use, but you are not entitled to: (i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Content and Services to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Content and Services to others without the prior written consent of Valve, except to the extent expressly permitted elsewhere in this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use); (ii) host or provide matchmaking services for the Content and Services or emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Valve in any network feature of the Content and Services, through protocol emulation, tunneling, modifying or adding components to the Content and Services, use of a utility program or any other techniques now known or hereafter developed, for any purpose including, but not limited to network play over the Internet, network play utilizing commercial or non-commercial gaming networks or as part of content aggregation networks, websites or services, without the prior written consent of Valve; or (iii) exploit the Content and Services or any of its parts for any commercial purpose, except as expressly permitted elsewhere in this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use).

No way i would delete my account. I would give my password and account to someone i know has kids and/or plays games. But that would be on the bottom of the list of things to do before i die of natural causes. Having a will, letting family have access to whatever money i have left those would be top priorities on the material side of making peace with life and people.

Already gave my 20 year old steam account to my son

If someone is so sheep that he/she lives totally by the ToS rules, that's his/her problem. How anyone would even get caught from that?

Also I'm pretty sure that at least in EU, the consumer law makes crap like that invalid.

Yep, me and some of my best friends used to share online game accounts in the past and its like whatever. 'not like anyone can tell'

It's like 'whatever, if me and my friends like what this company made, it's not like we should pay them or encourage them to keep making or supporting this content or similar content in the future'.

Pass it on to my son or grandson assuming he has kids.

Key sites sell accounts all the time so me gifting it doesn't seem like a huge deal regardless of the tos.

Under the unlikely scenario my kid or his kids do not play games probably gift it to whatever tech forum I'm apart of at the time maybe as a raffle or whatever.

I'd actually be more upset if he's not into my anime figures I plan on giving him they were substantially more expensive and harder to collect than my game library assuming I buy both at the same rates I currently do till that time.
