AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Looks pretty great, was thinking of getting one on an ITX case with a tiny cooler but the power draw bump over 7800x 3d is kinda nasty. I guess ill have to stick this into a normal tower.

Thanks for the review, but i think something important is missing: the 1% low fps from games, which are what these processors will be bought for. AMD claims the 9800X3D has up to 20% better 1% low fps compared to the 7800X3D in some games, and it cant be seen when taking only average fps into account.
Isn't that this page tho?

I mean, fair, but I don’t think there are a ton of 720p on 4090 enjoyers out there. For all actual practical purposes there is zero difference between mostly any i/R7 and up CPU from, like, last three gens.

Right. Higher resolution and lower tier GPU tests would be much more relevant for a "normal consumer".

Also, unfortunate that it lost energy efficiency compared to the 7800X3D. That was a truly special part of it. Not like the new model is a power hog, but the pessimistic predictions of its uplift being mostly due to MOAR POWAH BABY turned out to be mostly true, unfortunately.

Yes, how I asked:

"What part of the gaming improvement can be explained only by higher frequency compared to 7800X3D?"

Are there any tests anywhere where the 7800X3D and 9800X3D are used clocked to the same frequency?

cool, so basically anyone who was looking forward to getting the 7800x3d should get the 9800x3d instead
i'll hold out for zen6 x3d cpus :)
yup, unless you are like me who held out but then couldn't hold out any longer lol :D

@W1zzard F*cking amazing !! Nice that a great review, added that "DDR5-6200 UCLK 1:1 CL28 in this review (red bar)" make your review more unique from all others, big for have included a setting easy & faster that many can acheive.

looks awesome... can't really justify buying it for 4K gaming yet, but will grab it if I see a good bundle on it.

24H2 is still broken.

Works good for most everything, but there are some new problems.

Yeah i'm stupid, thank you!

It's not worth replacing it, I have to wait for the 9 9000x3d or 9950 x3d, but it's still great that there is positive progress.

if 9950X3d Turns half like this it will be a monster, Intel is most likely gone on those gaming charts, well unless, you run CUDIMM and 9000MT's gear 2 with tight memory settings.. (on Arrow Lake)

Seems like a missed opportunity to not include RDNA 3+ for AI accelerators.

Always boggles my mind when you have an all-new product with Zen 5, the latest and greatest that AMD has to offer for CPUs, but then pairs a 4yr old RDNA2 GPU architecture with it. Even RDNA3 is 2 years old at this point.

I've got a 7700X and game at WQHD, I believe the 9800X3D would give me about a less than 10% boost on average. I think I'll sit this one out. Hopefully, AMD has one or two more AM5 CPUs incoming, otherwise the whole AM5 longevity thing will be pointless.

Ryzen did an awesome job. But, I'm building a new PC and not so confident in paying that much money. And want to use my PC also for productivity.

Which CPU from Ryzen would be a good choice too? My GPU is 4070 ti super. Maybe these 3 options?
- 9900x
- 7900x
- 7700x

They are testing AMD with Win23H2....
so no BRANCH PREDICTION PATCH
The patch was backported to 23H2 but it's optional, IIRC. Meaning it won't be pushed to the machine unless the user bothers to do so. So testing with it might not be realistic in W1zz's eyes.

On the other hand, according to Microsoft Update Catalog, the patch was superseded by KBs 5043076, 5043145, 5044380 and 5044285, with 5043076 and 5044285 being critical security updates so... there are chances the branch prediction patch is already included if W1zz had his Windows setup up to date.

Where are the WIndows 24h2 benchmarks dude? it's a 6-10% boost across the board...
24H2 is not deemed all that stable yet.

9800x3D performance is 1% lower than expected @1080p.
