Windows 11 General Discussion

I remembered something about the compatibility of older software with Windows 10 and 11. In 2004 I programmed an application on my then Windows 2000 computer in visual basic 6. The application still works without any issues on Windows 11. Microsoft really offers good compatibility even with ancient software.

Windows 11 does kinda bizarre things. At worked I'm forced to use Windows 11. On Thursday my colleagues and I had suffered several hiccups/hangs on several applications. The worst and by far most annoying part was when I wanted to save my data in Matlab that Matlab had parsed through over an hour, but the "Save as" dialog (a Windows dialog) just would not show up. I tried to open an Explorer window, a couple of times and they just would not open either. So I opened Task Manager, just to find out it opens, but does not update any data at all. Now to top it off, closing Teams (!) would allow the Task Manager to update again, and like 15 minutes later, the "Save as" dialog as well as a couple of Explorer windows appeared. How they managed to fubar Windows is beyond me...

I still use VisualBasic 5.0 software here, because it's government-issued.

The one problem I have is with certain OCX components. They crash on me even with compatibility mode enabled. So I'll probably file a bug with the government at some point lol

They'll probably end up ditching the whole local app system for Web ones anyway.

Teams and other "bloatware" should not be running in the background. It should only be running when needed and then fully closed.

It's not Windows itself, it's the malformed apps that cause the Windows version of a kernel-panic that doesn't crash the system.

Well yes, but since the company decided it's the collaboration software of coice...

Still, unacceptable to "crash" the most basic applications like the task manager. That's so wrong.

You still shut it off when not being used.

Fully agree. I'm not trying to make excuses, only to explain what is happening so that understanding the solution can be clear.

With some recent updates, Win11 has changed some parts in the OS from (UK) English to Finnish. As funny as it may sound, I prefer my devices and software in English as it makes troubleshooting 1000% easier.

Going for a fresh reinstall since I have some booting problems, is there any way for preventing this in the future?

Our friend has a Microsoft surface Go (first gen) tablet running Windows 10 and windows is nearing the end of extended support. Yesterday I told them about it and they told me that they will decide what to do next. What would you people recommend? Should I recommend to install the officially unsupported windows 11 on the tablet or should I recommend a Linux OS like Ubuntu? Thanks for your recommendations.

An extreme solution would be to run LTSC IoT. That one is English only without any option otherwise unless you specifically manually install language packages. Note that keyboard layouts in whatever language you need would still be available to add on install.

My "guess" is this legacy hardware will not support the official or unofficial unsupported W11 - at least not with all the features in W11 working properly. Therefore my recommendation is for your friend to start shopping now for a new tablet.

I have seen reports from 3 years ago of some users successfully installing W11 on a Surface 1, but no recent reports with the latest versions of W11 - hence my "guess" above.

I will see what she will decide to do. I know that the tablet will 7 years old later this year. I found some cheap chuwi tablets with Windows 11. 8gb of ram, Intel N150 for 210€. Compared to only 4gb of ram on the surface go so it should be quite a bit better.

Yes, install the UK specific ISO.
Or possibly the International. Depending on which offers more natural access to äåæ etc.
Never had any problems with Finnish layout keyboard with both US or UK version of Windows since the 2000 (or even 98SE? Can't remember) days.

But I guess that the problem was that Finnish just got somehow installed as a secondary OS language whereas I need just ENG UK with FIN keyboard. Now everything's back to English, Finnish Notepad on English Win11 just looked hella stupid.

Yes, non-Enterprise versions tend to automatically download a language pack based on your Locale regardless of what System Language you have set during install as a choice. Has been doin that since 22H2 if you didn’t clamp down on Auto-Updates. You might see it even in the App List.

Yeah, Notepad wasn't the only application which got a translation. That's hella stupid that MS forces PART of your applications to your local language, don't you exactly go for an English version (of anything) if you don't like using it with your own langugage?

Wonder what they were smoking when they came up with this brilliant idea.

@Ruru
If it really annoys you just remove the unwanted language pack via Apps and/or Features and then block the download via a policy or reg tweak.
For example:
HKLM\software\policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DoNotConnectToInternetLocation = 1

That is an area of Windows installs I have not tinkered with, so it's a bit of a guess. I do know the UK specific version will stay on it's default language and region settings.

For the sake of completeness and general awareness alone it was mentioned.

I've installed the International English W11 ISO before. Alt codes ended up being preferable with the rare dip into Character Map for less common symbols, US English ISO.

No worries, I'll defer to your experience on that.

I have windows 11 home, so my edition doesn't come with bitlocker, but it says here it is still encrypted. should I manually turn this off? will it improve fps in games? i really don't care either way just curious

I'll still reinstall Win11 as it has a habit of hanging on the load screen. The circle runs fine but nothing happens, but when I manage to get the OS to load, there's not a single problem.

The install media should be in UK English, I'll check those secondary language packs after I've done reinstalling.

Damn, feels like I got a new PC after a fresh install! :toast:

Just need to install few game installers (installed Steam already) and we're back where we left few hours ago.

edit: so far, the Win11 applications haven't turned into Finnish
