The 9800GTX is better however - despite having less ram, it has a more powerful GPU, runs a lot cooler, uses less power, and has far more powerful Decoding for High Definition media. I own an 8800GTX and an 8800GT (the 9800GTX is very similar to the 8800GT) and i can say that the 9800GTX will prove far superior.

In terms of performance, it's very close. While we assume the 8800 would have better power at the top end with high resolutions, the 9800 stays right with it, however, the 9800 suffers lower minimum FPS with it's reduced bandwidth/memory.

In terms of power requirements, cooling and etc. The 9800 is suprisingly efficient drawing upon less power than expected, and needing less special cooling or high fan speeds to keep it within it's limits.

Pricing

Depending on where you live(naturally), prices will vary, though it seems the 8800 GTX prices are slightly lower in some places. Yet majorily, both the 8800 and 9800 are roughly the same in most cases, or within a margin of difference that's not worth concerning yourself over. A lot expected the 8800 price to fall even more, however distributors and resellers are not mindless drones. They know the 8800 GTX's performance and how much value it can still hold.

Having said that, if you'd like to save a little bit of money, I'd find yourself an EVGA 8800 GTS 512. With the money saved from not purchasing a GTX, you can afford to spend a little more on making sure you get an EVGA model for the warranty and step up program, which might come in handy later on. Note: I do not mean to purchase a "KO" or pre-overclocked one, stock will be fine.

its the 9800GTX absolutely, that G92 core just loves to be over clocked, and the 0.8ns memory on it is very nice.

mine runs happily all day @ 800/2000/2500 which makes for some really smooth gaming.

both. uptil 1680x1050 res, my GT is faster. It is overclocked to its limits (as is the GTX) but at resolutions below 1080p, the faster GPU/shaders matters more. its as simple as that. games do not use 768MB of ram yet.

edit: at stock clocks the GTX is of course faster. Its just that G92 based chips OC superbly, whilst still remaining cold. My GT is passively cooled, while my GTX overheats with a cooler far larger unless it has at least a 92mm fan on it.

The 9800's dump most of the heat into the case, which really sucks. This is based off of a few friends who purchased some 9800's and all they do is complain about the heat dumping into the case.

Where in Iraq are you? Why don't you hit up some CA people to get you a video card, say you're the electrical engineer for Taji or something and request it. Too easy.

Of course if you said you were the electrical engineer of Taji.. I'd have to approve of the funds going to you, so I wouldn't suggest it.

actually my 9800GTX runs very cool, i have put after market cooling on, but it was a decision solely driven by how loud the stock fan is at 100% constant.

keep in mind that if Mussels's 8800GT is faster than an 8800GTX (both max oc) at res's under 1920x1200, then my 9800GTX running even faster (+6%), with more shaders (+12.5%), and the memory providing +25% more bandwith, well, thats a hands down sub 1920x1200 win.

definatly nvidias best single gpu card out, given that youll have to buy it, so an Ultra just isnt worth the money.

hey Sol, my single 9800GTX already punches Crysis in the face, i can play DX10 at 1280x1024/1440x900 and its smooth as, lowest fps ive seen is about 28, which is way above the threshold of playable for crysis. although the quad core at 3.6ghz probably has something to do with that... however i will be moving to a 1920x1200 screen soon so im tossing up SLi now, or 9900 in a few months...

i love my sli..had to go to xp x64 to get it though the vista x64 drivers wouldnt do it...but in XP all settings on high and the cards oc'd i dont dip below 40 at 1440x900 so i think im doing pretty good. i wanted a GTX so bad but once iv gone sli.....im just not sure if i want to go back to 1 card..i might have to do sli all the time now...the one card might get lonely..i hope these 2 get along. but after returning 5 9600 these 2 worked so they must.

If you are gaming in the mid resolutions like 1680 x 1050 then the 9800 GTX wins. They have the same gpus as the 8800 gts while clocks a bit higher. The 8800 GTX has a different GPU and lower clocks although has more VRAM and Memory Bandwidth which makes it useful at higher resolutions ONLY (Ex:1920 x 1200)
