Intel: Let the pink slips hit the floor

A month after news of the layoffs was first heard, Intel is cruising along, quietly pruning workgroups. The first to find the notice on their desks were those in the XScale group, followed by the Software Solutions Group. However, while it's not exactly pleasant to find your senior manager waitng in your cube with a clipboard and a folded box, Intel has beeen fairly gentle with the cuts, allowing employees up to two months to find another job internally, or to accept a severance package and hit the road.

With sagging sales and a plummeting stock price, this is a desperation move by Intel to try and deceive Wall Street. Employees are always the pawns in the high stakes game of financial greed. You may recall Intel has been prosecuted and found guilty of tax fraud several times, violation of anti-trust laws on at least three continents, etc. Anything goes when it comes to financial greed.

Or it could just be becasue Intel is bringing back its engineers to run the company and not the salles and rep people. There realizing they don't need a bunch of random divitions take up money and eating resources.

When Otellini said that they were cutting $1B, how did you expect them to do that??? They NEED to get rid of products, projects, and divisions that don't make financial sense! They need to be streamlined to reduce waste... It is VERY easy to add unnecessary spending in a big company, and this is where they clean out the people that should have never had jobs with Intel in the first place.

They could have been a lot worse about it. At least they are being nice about it and giving the people some time to find a new job elsewhere in the company or giving them a severence package.

Most companys would just have you come in on Mondat morning to your desk gone and all your shit packed in a box and a nice "We'll mail you your paychack" as a goodbye.

Ah, like managers that have never done the jobs themselves, running those who have (insert job type/title here)?

:)

* The same management that made those very projects (to justify their existence & have something more to "oversee") they will be cutting? And, by people who actually PRODUCE something (not just memos & meetings), instead of those making those projects to be cut (obviously a mistake/bad judgement making them in the first place)??

Typically, controlling payroll as an expense/credit on the general ledger IS the easiest/simplest thing to do for cost control... question is, are the correct people being cut?

I don't think so!

(There's something out there, which I am SURE you've all heard of: It's called "office politics"... & the "rats tend to flock together" on this account, & the actual productive educated + skilled production folks get the axe!)

APK

P.S.=> Not busting on your assessment or you personally, but it is what I have seen in THIS field in particular, from an MIS/IS/IT perspective for over 13 years now professionally!

IMO @ least, in "corporate america" today:

There are FAR too many 'chiefs' that haven't done a job of their underlings/subordinates, themselves - too many "mgt. & business analysts" that basically only "move the paper from the right side of the desk to the left side of the desk" types sending memos/emails, & making up meetings & choosing directions that end up being cut anyhow...

Wasteful & stupid & yet it goes on like mad...

(How can people that haven't done a job or process themselves run it well? Especially when that "mgt." has NOT done the job @ hand they are overseeing themselves! I.E. -> How can they effectively manage a process they have never done themselves?? They have no experience in it, professionally + hands-on!)
