The RV740 graphics processor by AMD could well be the first GPU in production, to be built on the newer 40nm manufacturing process, giving its makers something to brag about. The RV740 design and specifications are largely derived from the RV770LE (covered here), while bringing the GDDR5 memory standard to the mainstream.

Chinese industrial journals tell DigiTimes that the company has completed taping-out the RV740, and that the GPU is awaiting mass-production by AMD's foundry partner, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Mass production of products based on this GPU could commence by the end of Q1 2009.

On to the opposite camp, NVIDIA looks to start its 40nm conquest with the GT212 that succeeds the current 55nm GT206 (aka G200b). This GPU is expected to be taped-out at the beginning of 2009. Its successors, the next generation GT216 and GT300 would follow in mid-thru-late 2009.

ATI step forward in GPU technology , 40 nm that's great in cooling and overclock

Let's hope they can do a silent cooling solution for this. Or very nearly silent. Current gen cards are very powerful, but require too much heat/too much power for my preference. If they can keep this thing cool then a RV740x2 device would be nice.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the RV740 is a low end card, so probably wouldn't come n a x2 fashion (unless you mean CF'ing it yourself).

And as the way I look at noise, if you want something to be fast don't expect it to be quiet, this goes for just about anything that has to do with speed in one way or another.

from what i understand, the rv740 could actually end up being faster than a rv770pro(4850), so we never know granted that ATI might not do it themselves but give partners the go ahead to do so.

Can't wait, glad I didn't swap out my HD 3870 yet.

Hopefully the 5870 is a beast and worth buying. Always like to skip a generation just to be safe :P

Major improvements the 4000 series have over the 3000 is the Mem Controller was changed, AA/AF dont take a major hit, and the 4850 Runs cooler than the 3870, i do however think they could use the cooler from the 3870 on the 4850 and 4870.

The 5xxx series will have 25% more shaders and 50% more transistors or the other way around and some better clocks. Read this somewhere.

IF they can get it going good with this mid version card, the 5XXX series should be good to go!
