Plexeraser - destroy your DVD and CDs

Plextor will soon introduce a new DVD/CD drive. This one does not burn anything for you, but will destroy your DVD/CDs so that the data cannot be read anymore. This may be a cheap alternative to those expensive disc shredders. It will take around 6 minutes to destroy one DVD/CD, which is an awful long time to keep the police waiting in front of your door.

Yeah, I love new tech stuff too, but this almost seem pointles... if you're worried about the l33t forensic types, just take your favorite screwdriver to the foil on top and VIOLA!!! no more data

I never did it, it was never necessary, but if someday it is it is a possibility
PS: i'm not saying that i have pirated cd's, but i don't say i don't have either

I hear the microwave is fun, but I figured its not good on the microwave no metal is healthy for microwaves izzit, I've put metal in my microwave for a second by mistake before, but I think it didetn harm much concidering it weas just a second or 2.

you *can* safely put metal in the microwave, kinda like you *can* safely put magnets all over harddrives; its just easier to tell everybody you can't than to explain the careful procedures to follow when doing so.

also, what ever happened to scratching the bejesus out of the tops of CDs/DVDs with a screwdriver? the recording medium turns to dust and would be effectively impossible to piece together...

I even read, on CPU magazine and Maximum PC, that even the microwave method isnt totally safe. The data can be put back together by determined FBI/CIA folks. Sucks though, the smell is awful but the light show is cool.

If its **that** necessary to destroy it, further methods can be easily accounted for..

If you need to, take a propane torch to the stack... they'll all be a clump of plastic.. no diggin the foil outta that.

hold the cd with ur left hand and lighter at ur right hand.burn it!!
simple way to destroy.

Well as long as we're at it, lets soak them in bleach, scratch them with a screwdriver, break them into pieces with a sledge hammer, then microwave, then blow torch, then put them on an RC boat, tied to rocks with some m80's (or c4 if you have it ) with a remote detonator, pilot them about 1/4 mile out into the ocean and blow up the boat so they sink to the bottom, then scooba out there and bury them with sand.

The way CD's work is that there is dull and shiny surfaces on it. the foil just helps it reflect more, they could just easily put new foil on it, you have to melt all the bottom of the CD for it to become dataless.
