Quick question about the AMD 720BE

is it any good?

how high can it overclock on air?
it it sufficient for gaming?
how future proof is it?

I'm at 3.48Ghz, which was easy as hell, definitely has more in it. I've seen most 720BEs go to 3.6-3.7Ghz on air.

Yes its MORE than sufficient for gaming, games are generally GPU limited.

About as future proof as anything else, it'll last a good few years.

if i leave it at stock speed.. will it still perform at the same gaming standard as if i overclock to say... 3.6Ghz?

i think the general rule of thumb to avoid gpu bottlenecking is 3.2 ghz which is EASILY acheivable on stock voltage

AMD OverDrive is very easy to use and can do windows overclocking. And yes, the 720BE is the best CPU for the price!

The only thing with AMD overdrive is make sure you save or write down your stable profile..when I clocked my 9850be before I sold it, it would not save so do it through your BIOS.

Yea, 720BE is known as the processor to buy for gaming nowadays... quite futureproof, great for gaming and yet inexpensive and overclockable

not necessarily,

if i have a 3.2 E2100 does that mean my gtx285 wont be bottle necked? haha no not a chance that cpu will hold it back so badly.

the amd stock would be fine.

The only ones that don't have DDR3 controllers are the 940 and 920. All the other Phenom II have DDR3 controllers.

mine is @ 3.6 with 1.39v on air cooling. Can boot @ 3.8Ghz and 4Ghz but not stable and no time to mess with it.

a stable overclock simply means that the overclock is "safe" and won't cause your computer to crash. As for your question about 1.39v, that's the voltage he is running through his CPU to make that overclock stable. And yep the 720BE would be better @ 3.5ghz than a q6600 stock, but then who has a stock q6600?

, i'm at 3ghz, can run 3.2ghz stable but the voltage and temp bump i need isn't worth it. Once i get a new mobo though, i feel my chip should be able to do 3.4ghz 24/7 at least, i've ran 3dmark06 at 3.6ghz but it's not very stable.

I really recommend you take some time and simply google "how to overclock a CPU" and just get some base knowledge with voltages and some settings, so even if your using software to overclock, which is a sin, you'll understand what it's doing to achieve the oc.

i don't know the technicalities, but if you use the bios it's a much more stable and solid way to overclock. With software your running through the OS to tune the CPU, which is always more buggy than bios settings. best i can come up with, i'm sure someone else will answer it more detailed but that's the general idea.
