ATI X1600PRO 256MB 3DMark05 4.5k
nVidia 6800LE 128MB 3DMark05 4.1k

errrrr........is this right

As you know there is nothing to unlock on the X1600PRO but I can unlock my 6800LE from 8/4 to 16/5, (the other vertex shader doesnt work). I tried both of the cards with a fresh install each time. the specs of both read like this:-

6800LE 128Mb
Memory Bus Type: 64x4 (256 bit)
DirectX Compliance: 9.0c
OpenGL Compliance: 2.0
PS Version: 3.0
VS Version: 3.0
Fragment Pipelines: 8 (16)
Vertex Pipelines: 4 (6)
Texture Units: 8 (16)
Raster Operators 8 (16)
GPU: NV40
Interface: AGP 8X
Core Clock: 300 MHz
Memory Clock: 350 MHz (700 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 22.4 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 5120 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 5120 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 5120 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 400 MVertices/sec

X1600PRO 256Mb
Memory Bus Type: 32x4 (128 bit)
DirectX Compliance: 9.0c
OpenGL Compliance: 2.0
PS Version: 3.0
VS Version: 3.0
Fragment Pipelines: 12
Vertex Pipelines: 5
Texture Units: 4
Raster Operators 4
GPU: RV530
Interface: AGP 8X
Core Clock: 500 MHz
Memory Clock: 390 MHz (780 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 12.48 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 6000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 2000 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 2000 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 625 MVertices/sec

I memory can be a key factor in benchmarking, but it can make this much differences, with FEAR's performance test my X1600PRO only managers 2fps higher on average over my 6800LE. weird :wtf::confused::mad:

The x1600PRO is a pretty weak card. That sounds about right for its performance. A lot of people (including myself) have considered it for their final AGP card, but changed their minds after doing a little research. I went with an X800GTO with 16 pipes.

6800 series and the X800 are very similar in specification:-

6800
Memory Bandwidth: 22.4 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 5120 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 5120 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 5120 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 480 MVertices/sec

X800
Memory Bandwidth: 22.4 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 4800 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 6400 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 4800 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 600 MVertices/sec

so i selected the 6800 card, as it was cheaper than a X800. ive alway been a ATI guy so looking at these specs and some benchmarks there was very little in it between these cards so rather than forking out the extra £45 ($90) i selected the 6800 card. im just surprised that the extra level of performance was not the big boost i was expecting plus i saw my mates X800XL the other day a i was not overally impressed. bring on DX10

128MB cards just cant cut it these days, not enough onboard memory. what really limits a X1600 is its DDR speed, you should start to notice significant FPS increases as you clock it up, at stock, yes its a weak card, OCd, its not that bad, though in todays modern games and shit programming you need a powerhouse of a card just to run the game at anything which can be considered even semi acceptable.

I miss the days when a 3 year old card played brand new games just fine. Now, game producers are working directly with the card manufacturer’s (mostly NVIDIA) and BAM! You need a new card about every 9 months.
