Because there are already TV tuners out for the PCI-E 1X slot so you don't need to have the PCI version. The market moves forward so fast that by the time you install something that just came out it is obsolete. Just like S939. IT was supposed to be around longer than it is. I still don't understand why AMD had to change sockets just to adapt to DDR2 other than to force us all to buy new boards too.

Because they have to use a completely different memory controller... and to maintain backwards compatability would cause more confusion than there already is...

AM2 = 939 pins, different layout ;)

DDR2 is not simply a "revamp" of DDR, its very very different... normal 939 CPUs wouldnt be able to handle it anyways...

I understand that, I was just doing my share of the venting since that the advice being given 9-12 months ago when you'd ask about upgrades was "Go S939, it will be around for years". I know I shouldn't have listened then because of how fast tech advances in such a short time. Oh well, my Opteron system will get me through the next few years just fine......

AM2 has no realistic advantages as it is. 939 will still be supported for that very reason..

there was always so many people begging "OMG GIMME DDR2 PLZ PLZ PLZ!"

It is however cheaper than DDRI :)

Well AM2 does have an advantage with its DDR2, once you get past ddr2 667 the performance difference can really be seen, bandwidth is just huge, i took somones spot in science mark cause of ddr2 alone, my proc was clocked 100 or 200mhz lower, memory was at about 740mhz. ddr2 also uses less voltage, which would be better suited towards mobile electronics, but either way. Also, AM3 cpus will work on AM2 boards, so theres another 'advantage' :p.

Those arent "the only" tv tuners that exist :rolleyes:

yes but you would think that ATI would rollout a PCI-E card with Their NEW flagship in the press release :D :D

agreed... end result being if you want HDTV on your rig and you like the way the ati cards work [ dependable/drivers ect.] at this time [read today] you will need to buy a new MB with that [pci] slot ......

Its only one...

But if you're running Crossfire, Physix card, and a tv tuner in the same system, a few extra hdd's aswell im sure.. you're going to need a BIG psu..

Big $$$ system with everything in one...

Why not just build a small htpc with these? Matx boards have 3-4 pci slots... and you can probably build it for a lot cheaper w/out sacrifice pc performance or slots for other necessities ;)

Yes thats what would be and is the best solution : htpc -ati1600 card agp- sat reciever card pci- tv turner pci- mid range northwood- 1gig 400 ddr---ect bargin basement for those of us who don't flinch at the $$ involved in our enjoyment of the tech. But for those on limited $ any extra builds hurt big time ..... i'm quite sure the whole issue will be self correcting inside of the next 12 months:rockout:

If you know where to get the parts, a secondary build would most likely be cheaper than integrating it in with a main build :laugh:
