Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Scavenge, the fourth game mode to be included in its upcoming zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2.

Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.

On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles. Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.

L4D2 also introduces the AI Director 2.0, adding the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom-fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Finally, with new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and a brand new competitive mode all available at launch.

I guess I need to play L4D because I really don't see what all the fuss is about. This "Scavenge Mode" sounds like something you would play on one of those old arcade games you see in the family pizza joints and mini-golf attractions that just gathers dust. :ohwell:

This sounds very fun and finally another mode where you can play as infected. I just hope they can get the maps configured so its not so easy for infected to camp by the Generators.

Super fun, team based zombie killing mayhem. Time to play! :toast:

This sounds interesting, certainly not what i thought the new mode would be - only time will tell to see if it is a popular mode like vs or if it gets played until everyone has the achievements then never plays it again like survival...

Suppose I'll probably buy it either first time it goes on sale or after I hear how different it is from the original.

I'll probably be getting it but I want to see 8v8 with all characters on all maps on all maps from 1 & 2 if you have both games.

Stolen from the Zombie Master HL2 mod. :shadedshu

Yeah, I was reading this and thinking "I was playing something VERY similar to this in Synergy the other week..."

This looks like an interesting game mode, although I'm rubbish at playing as the infected I might still try this!

although I'm rubbish at playing as the infected

your not the only one. I cant stand versus mode on L4D just like I cant stand zombie mods on other games.

Everything is a rip off these days, *sigh :ohwell:

Sounds interesting, at least its something else to play im all for some variety in the game modes.

Wow... If 'l4d2' was a 15 dollar add-on for L4d I might consider buying it. But valve trying to pass it off as worthy of my 50 bucks makes me laugh....

Huh? This game carries enough add-ins to warrant being a sequel and is worth $50. How is it not worth the money?

That is your opinion. My opinion is the game isn't that great to warrant paying 50 dollar for a sequel based on the same exact idea. ;)

I have gotten 3 extra zombie maps from call of duty WaW, along with 9 new multilayer maps, and had to pay a total of 0 dollars for them. Also I paid 10 bucks for the game to begin with. That is value to me. :P

P.S. Also, I have played 19 hours of left4dead, and 170 hours of WaW. That is probably just because I prefer cod mp over l4d versus though...

Don't understand why L4D in any case. I mean sure new stuff is nice, but HL2/3 sequel would of been something or Portal 2. This L4D is kinda lose of interest from the begin for me.

Multiple design teams, I'm sure HL2 Ep3 has been in development for a while. Portal would get boring a bit quicker, especially without the aspect of multiplayer, that was a game I played through once sober, once drunk and then was done with it. But with L4D I can pick it up with some friends and just go around killing zombies with a challenge. I honestly would prefer it to be just map packs and weapon packs, but that isn't going to happen.

.

most sequels are exactly that.

you're saying you'd never buy a sequel - i find that hard to swallow. if it aint broken, why fix it? add new shit, let people enjoy it.

it may not be worth $50 USD, but who the hell pays that much :P there are numerous ways to get steam games cheaper.

This game does get old quick if you play with your friends for the first few weeks it comes out. But after a while 1 of your friends get bored and when one leaves the team the whole game just get so old and then everyone stops playing! And playing online with strangers and or on your own can't match the experience when you play with friends imo.

Anyways this sequel looks promising, but I sorta do agree that they could have done more, I wouldn't really call the game a sequel if it uses the same graphics engine, it will still be limited to the things it could do as the first game.

even if it uses the same engine, there will be updates. new textures, updating models and lighting, etc.

look at the half life 2 episodes, each one snuck in improvements, even when the engine didnt change (and when it did change, big improvements!)

I wouldn't buy a sequel that is pumped out a year later with no graphic improvements, and the same storyline, of a game that I only play rarely with friends, and not online, that costs a full 50 dollars.

Thus I said I would consider it if it were $15, but it will probably be a while before I can find it that cheap, considering that people can't sell activated copies... because of steam...

Yeah, but source engine is just getting plain dated. But I really can't see a new engine until half life episode 3. Half life has a great story to go along with it, left4dead has no story. It is really only fun if you can get your friends together to play co-op (if you don't play versus like me...)

To the people who are complaining about spending having to spend $50 for LFD2: Gather up three people to buy a 4-pack while it is on sale, and it basically comes out to $34 each. Even the first one is worth $34 imo.

The friends I play it with have already told me they aren't interested in it either. :|

plus $34 is still >$15...

Yes I would say the first one is worth $34, however, if somone already owns the first one, unless you are really really into l4d, and play versus on a daily basis or something, there is no way that this one will be worth another 50, or even 34 dollars...

If you play it just for the co-op with friends, might as well just download some user-made maps for the first one...

Edit: I think you are better off getting 10 games here:

Why do people get so butthurt over sequals? They happily pay £30 for Fifa 2027, bt when it comes to a game thats going to be updated and have additions made until their eyes bleed they cry all over the forum?

Makes me laugh. If you aint buying it, dont post. Simple really.

Left 4 dead is such a good game I even play single player when I want to quickly smash things up :D

With bullets!

"Ill punch that zombie with some bullets" lmfao.

You know what im looking most forward to? whacking the new bosses with a frying pan. 4 of us on a map, all going "dink!" "dink!" "dink!" "Take that you shit!"
