Toshiba, manufacturer of a number of electrical goods, has announced a new 100GB hard drive only 1.8 inches in size. This enormous capacity gives it the largest storage of its class, with a low power consumption of 0.003 Watts per gigabyte. The drive manages to store an impressive 155.3 gigabits per square inch, spining at 4,200rpm with transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s. It is expected to begin shipping in the second half of 2007.

Drives like this could quickly find uses in portable multimedia players where the low power consumption and high storage levels are essential to modern day consumers seeking ever smaller devices with longer battery life. So far there is no word on price but these are likely to be expensive, considering your standard 80GB drive can be priced in excess of $40.

what the hell would u use that for?????

it just goes to show you the technology this is already available and no doubt toshiba laptops may start weighing a few lbs light in the future. lol that is bigger than the sata connector

portable devices...duh ;)

ie psp, pda, mp3z, cell phones..etc.

100 gig flash drive

I'm too lazy to look it up, is it 5 or 8MM? 5MM would be good, but I bet it's 8 like the largest models always are.

Holy Sh*t! They made an HDD for amebas.

How can it be the size of 1/3 of a finger and at the same time, larger than a battery?

That was confusing me as well. I'm not sure if it's either some midget battery, a giant hand or just a fake pic.

Maybe the hand of a giant? :p

Thats cool, but something tells me that it will be crazy expensive. The 80GB 1.8" drives are something like $300+, I hate to see the price of this.

i didnt even know there was 80GB 1.8" drives, do u have a link

are these sata ?

I want that for my gp2x...

I'm not sure of any of the details but this news story on the register from back in 2004 talks about the 80GB version.

yea wtf kinda hand is that!?

Its probably the actual drive with the disk platters and stuff from within that hard drive case. It is a 1.8" hard drive after all.

the battery pic is real but the hand one is a crappy PS. look at the jaggies around the drive.

by the way 1.8" drives are what are in the ipod videos if i am not mistaken.

The giant hand has now been removed! :D
