Dell Develops New Convertible Tablet Notebook Design Concept

At the ongoing Intel Developer Forum event, Dell showed off its latest convertible tablet notebook concept, which breaks away from the conventional "screen-swivel" design which tends to make the device thicker due to the big rotary joint. Dell's design is as slim as any normal notebook, with a typical lid hinge, except that the screen is held by two joints on either sides, allowing it to flip, thus converting it between a multi-touch tablet and a notebook. The only downside we so far is that the web-camera is fixed on the bezel facing the notebook side. Dell may capitalize heavily on this concept building a number of models with different sizes and specifications.

i'm expecting to see them with built in GPS, sim card slots (for 3G use) and so on.

If the design works well and is priced around 500ish i would prob buy one it would be super usefull for a tech especially if i could get an e-sata port and an Nic and dare i say HDMI out on it.

Things ipad does = works with itunes, battery life
Things these "will hopefully" do = everything else, better

All good, except it seems to me that has potential to be full fledged netbook with a gimmick... and very useful one at that.

I hope it's got a sturdy design, because to me this looks like it's asking to be broken.

I'd of gone with a double hinge system on the outer edge of the screen so it could be folded back in on its self for a tablet. ( taking the place of the bezel)

totally agree that it looks fragile the rma's would be through the roof. Interesting concept but haven't we already had laptops with reversible screens? Instead of a hinge within the top frame the whole top turned around and folded back.

The ipad is just a massive ipod touch, they act like its a whole new idea.
The benefits are its just a lappy/netbook whatever and a touch screen on a swivel. Instantly i would rather get this than a ipad, the only benefit to the ipad is the support and the app store.

I agree they could have done better with the design it looks kinda flimsy and i dont see why the screen has to be in its own frame why cant they just design it to swivel on its own?

the frame idea is the whole point, as the swivel on a regular screen tends to break.

the frame itself can be made durable and with a lock to prevent unwanted turning - you just lock it in either 'book' or laptop modes.

I must say this is a great idea.
I do like the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, however I think this takes the cake as a hybrid.

How come? This is a netbook with a monitor that can be flipped. The epad is nothing like that.
