GeForce GTX 580 Cooling Solution Detailed to Public

Vapor chamber for a reference design? Nice!

Clearly, you were reffering to the slide.. when it clearly stated 'Accoustics' in the corner. Try and read first before commenting.

Aw, ok... I didn't understand it first... Thanks...:)

looking good thus far love the what they did with the alien, but still gonna be a while before we see anythign like that in game. Which is a pity because it looks like a programmers dream, get a couple character renderings and all of the suddent be able to mold them into others without waiting on additional designs.

2900XT was the first to feature a vapor chamber. More common today than most think. Basically all AMD card refernce designs that output decent heat have a vapor chamber.

I didn't know the 2900XT had a vapor chamber. I owned one. So much damn potential.

Yeah, that potential has been pushed more and more with each successive release since then. Overall power consumption has stayed the same at the high-end, but per mm heat output has increased, and really only vapor chamber tech can move heat away fast enough(well, other than water).

Slightly more power from this card, eh? And at the same time, lower operating temps and noise? Sounds good to me, if the price is right. However, I really wonder, given that slide mentioning GTX285 acoustics...is this the 480's "485" replacement?

And people bitch about AMD's naming scheme?

And yeah, take a look at the 2900XT cooler form the underside, and you can see the nipple where they filled the chamber. I have one of mine right here next to me, looks like it's filled with glue.

NVIDIA is just a couple of days away from releasing the GeForce GTX 580, the company's trump card which came literally out of nowhere, compared to AMD's Northern Island GPUs, which were talked about for months. At the PDXLAN 16.5 event, NVIDIA showed off some slides that are most relevant to gamers, notably the thermal and acoustic characteristics of the reference design thermal solution. The latest thermal solution does look a lot more compact compared to that of the GTX 480, especially the lack of that hot-plate and heat pipes sticking out is notable.

The new cooling solution relies on vapor-chamber technology to convey heat to the aluminum fins, instead of heat pipes. The fan features a more refined adaptive fan profile. Combined with a more power optimized GPU, the new thermal solution is said to be more efficient and quiet compared to even that of the GeForce GTX 285.

Well, well Nvidia.
Good to see you're finally releasing the GTX480 like you promised so long ago.

can't wait to see this card in reviews, it might actually be awesome... everything the GTX480 should have been. perhaps more.

i just don't understand why mfg's started making dual slot coolers that still dumped exhaust in the case when there's the easy option to blow it out the freaking back.

Even Arctic Cooling doubled back on themselves after the impressive Silencer line back in the early 2000's

hmm, I see a 480 V2, nice. If they have fixed the issues on the 480, and they're selling the new design on a reasonable price, I would call that good. I'm indeed tired of nvidia rebranding... I would call it a 485.

Hey dudes can you run 3 monitors with the 580 or do you still need 2 cards?
