Did you flash the bios to OC it? Or just using software to do the job?

I am reading all about this and i have the bios modding tools to do the job, I've read a-lot of the info i could find about OC my 5850... But i am just a-bit worried about it not being stable and crashing on boot so i won’t be able to change the settings in its bios unless i have another GFX card to boot up on?

Iv got aftermarket cooling for the GPU and am using the standard "cooling plate" that is a part of the standard heat sync for the VRAM and VDDC's etc.

Thanks

hey "grassy" ,,i got a zalman VF1000 that im thinking to put on 5850,,, anyway i never played with the bios on this card,, msi afterburner does it all,,,fan profiles,,overclocks,,and card down clocks as soon as i quit the game with oc still applied in the msi afterburner, so im satisfied. only thing is i had to modify couple of registries for afterburner not to lock up and modify config file to disable limits ,,,btw there is an option to apply oc at startup,,(haven't tried)

Hmm ok, I'm going to get a PCI GFX card and play around with the bios, if i don’t over volt it i can just update the bios again if it doesn’t work by using the other PCI card I can change the bios setup in windows again...

Hey anyways a grate tip i had to find out the hard way with the aftermarket cooler the little VRM coolers are not enough for the 5xxx cards the VRM get so hot, Uunscrew the plate from the bottom of the standard cooler remove the fan and refit the metal plate to the GFX card(use the old heat transfer stuff on the bottom of the metal base) you may need to mod it so you can fit your cooler on still or just mod the aftermarket cooler slightly raise the heat pipes or something if you want some pics i can supply.

The cooler keeps my VRM’s at a very nice temp of around 35ºc idle never gets passed 50ºc(load) with a system temp of 27ºc gpu is around the same..

hey "grassy" , i recently found this mod which is exactly what i want to do, i was also thinking of putting 2 80mm fans on that cooler,,, is this what u r talking about? it seems like i shouldn't have any problems attaching the cooler, and vrm temps dont seem bad

Yeah mate that’s it! I used the twin turbo pro http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=22.? it was a little hard to fit the stock coolers base plate to the card with that aftermarket cooler though but I’m going to get another 5850 and run them in crossfire so i needed a low profile one...

Edit; just put the 5870 bios on my 5850 works grate and now its unlocked so i can mod it with msi afterburner tomorrow I’ll try over clock it some more just the gpu tho and then once it works I’ll put it into the cards bios! Much better than having extra programs running in background :D
