There was a big surprise at the 23rd Chaos Computer Conference. A masked hacker demonstrated an Xbox 360 running a Linux and Mac OS logo on the console, followed by the phrase "coming soon". He used a copy of the King Kong game and a PCB plugged into a notebook to place the logos of the two operating systems on the Xbox 360. While giving the demonstration, the hacker did not say a single word. You can watch the YouTube videos here and here.

why was he masked? if he owned the console he could do what he wanted with it.

I'm guessing its not the first thing he has hacked and there are probably many parties interested in his whereabouts ;)

good point, i didnt think about that

Is there anything a ninja CAN'T do?

Anyhow on topic, I still can't understand the constant obsession with getting Linux on every possible device imaginable. What is Linux on your console going to do, who cares? Other than the obvious, look it can be done. Computer hardware that can run an alternate OS, who would have thought!?!

Usually I spend my time playing games on the console I just plunked $400 down on. Not tooling around on a half-assed linux distribution.

Those three PPC cores would run Linux rather spiffily, so that'd be the reason. Yay :)

Fold like a mofo. Imagine the points you'd collect from folding.

That's certainly a compelling reason for someone to waste their time

Hell, I though OS X would've been on it a month after 360's release. The 360 would destroy my G5 in computing power. Why run OS X on 360 you ask? How about one super cheap AND fast Mac.

do you realize how fast that xbox would burn up when folding? my god it gets hot enough running games..

not impressed. show me linux actively running on a 360, then i might be impressed.
