Laptop or netbook?

lookiing at getting a new laptop or netbook whats the difference apart from the specs? what can a laptop doo that a netbook cant do?

"Netbook" is a term created a few years back that somewhat vaguely describes a class of tiny, not powerful laptops, often with good battery life. They usually have 10.1" screens or smaller.
Recently there are more netbooks that don't run extremely slow. Also, 11.6" has become a popular screen size. I don't think anyone has a real clear and universal idea of what a netbook is, at least anymore.

Anyway, to answer your question, they both run the same software. If you need a DVD/Blu-Ray drive, remember to make sure it's there, many netbooks and small laptops don't have one.

EDIT: Many netbooks come with "Windows 7 Starter", look out for that. It only supports up to 2GB RAM, doesn't let you change the wallpaper, doesn't support Windows Aero Glass, etc. It has all sorts of limitations.

Netbooks are designed for that; the net. Easy mobility with long battery life.
Laptops are designed to a lot more work than a netbook; like always.

So the question is: Do you want something small and easily portable? Or do you want a machine similar to that of a mainstream desktop?

Netbooks tend to be smaller, lighter and a lot more portable then laptops, unfortunately they can be a fair bit slower then mainstream laptops due to being equipped with ULV processors, so performance wise they have less performance clock for clock against a mainstream laptop processor running at the same speed.

Laptops are bigger, so they can house and run with higher performance parts. and this makes them heavier then netbooks.

with all the power hungry components packed into a laptop. youre lucky to reach 2hrs or more away from the mains on a single charge. but there are some laptops that are better at managing power then others.

A small netbook cant handle much gaming or heavy multitasking. technology has improved though, Nvidia ION platform and AMD's APU's are neck and neck and suitable for light gaming and watching 1080P videos. both which a stardard ATOM processor struggles to do.

those E350 based netbooks are quite good. They perform pretty much like a real computer, and has long battery life. There is upcomming E450 based ones, look those up.

if you use for light usage and needs longer battery life you could take netbook
but you need to compromize with no cd rom, smaller screen and limited performance
but if you do mid or heavy usage take notebook coz it gives you better performance in heavy task

The only netbook worth a damn that I'm aware of is the Alienware M11x. Just get a laptop.

It depends on what you want to do, like others have already stated. Gaming isn't a priority for a netbook or heavy load applications, however netbooks are nice for browsing the web and word processing and generally allowing you to use them anywhere, for myself it's nice to having my netbook in University lectures, the mini tables are pefect size for fitting one on.

Being perfectly honest, I can't see the world of netbooks advancing much more than it has, smartphones can pretty much do everything a netbook can and more. Perhaps considering a Laptop vs Smartphone might be an option?

As far as smartphones are concerned, their not at that stage where they can compete directly with netbooks 1:1. at least not until one of the manufactuer's comes up with a feature that can project a holographic image of a keyboard so you can type on it.

Its more Netbooks/ultraportables Vs Pads. I can see pads taking off extremely well with AMDs evolution and creation of low power APU's (and some what Intel Atoms & their poorly GMA3150 graphics) but they suff the same problem as any smartphone.....No Keyboard.

Asus Transformer is an exception, as it can be docked with a keyboard to make it into a netbook.

People will still be using netbooks for a long while to come, as technology for that particular platform has seen huge improvements over the last few years. and it will keep getting better and better. In 5-10years time. we will have a super ultraportable that surpases almost any mid to high range gaming laptop.

the Alienware M11 is somewhat proof of what can currently be done.

I have a netbook and I like it, IMO better than a laptop for doing basic tasks due to being more portable and more comfortable than a Tablet or smartphone.

Well can accept some really old games like Counter strike 1.6 in my Intel HD 3150 Atom N455, but yeah that's true

I wouldn't count on a netbook for playback especially HD content, I'd get a cheaper laptop to do that if I were you. I have a netbook myself a gen year old I think and it can't handle playback, it stutters and has very low frames like a slideshow in fullscreen although if windowed it has better performance but definitely not for HD watching movies.

Or get a netbook with an AMD APU in it. Optionally if you have a free mini-PCi-E slot inside your netbook you can get a Broadcom HD decoder card.

ok im looking at this laptop Asus K52N Laptop

It really depends what you need the laptop for.

but you didnt really provide us a budget to work with OR specify what you wanted or needed a netbook/laptop to do so we couldnt help you look for something better then what you ordered.

the laptop i linked to will perform a lot better then the K52N

theres lots of laptops ranging from £300 up to £340 on that same page, it would have been easy to stretch to something a lot lot better.

I have the K50, which is about 2 generations behind. Can't say I like it, but it was good value for money and its quite sturdy. My friend have the K51 and I can say the same thing to it, so I would assume the K52 is of the same vein.

If you want a computer, you should always for a good deal to pop out, instead of buying as needed, because every so often you get a super good deal (like mine when I bought it). However, since that you bought yours already, enjoy it and don't bother with comments like this because it can do nothing other than hurt your feelings.

but its cool bro - its your money. Its not my job to tell you how to spend it.

If your happy with your purchase thats all that matters.

a car from a scrap heap might cost you £30, have no working electronics, no working headlights, electric windows/sun roof, heater or displays on the dashboard. but thats fine.

So long as you are happy with your purchase.

Good point, the K52N seems to be exceptionally bad, the K52F seems to be doing well though.
