I've been dealing with terrible internet for a while. I've tried wireless routers/adapters but they have produced inconsistent speeds. Just recently, I noticed that some wall outlets in my house have ethernet ports on them. However, I'm not sure how to set up the network.
There is a main panel in the house with what appears to be an area where all the cables meet. (Please excuse me, my knowledge of networking is fairly limited). So my main goal is to make the ethernet ports on 2 outlets work (I only need it in 2 rooms). Is it possible to achieve this with only a modem and a router w/ 4 ethernet ports? I'm using a Cisco WRT160N and an AT&T modem.
Any help is appreciated. I'll try to update with more info if necessary.
The modem I am using is apparently connected to the phone jack (DSL?). Here's basically what I know...
Phone jack on wall ---> modem ---> ethernet cable ---> Router (Wireless)
Lets say I move the modem into that control panel area, where would it connect to in order to get internet?
