The Windows Server code-named "Longhorn" is the successor to Windows Server 2003. Numerous sources suggest that the Operating System will be name Windows Server 2007 or 2008, depending on its release date. The Longhorn server beta program will be launching within the next few weeks. Microsoft is allowing public preregistration for beta testing of the upcomming "longhorn" server operating system. Allegedly Microsoft will have it available for download within the next week or so.

Oh yeah, people really want to beta-test a server

While were at it, lets precariously balance some papers above this here gas stove and leave it for a while to see what happens...

Believe it or not? I actually do... I am hauling it in when it comes down for the heck of it, because I am picking up a NEVER USED 160gb Maxtor SATA 2 disk from a buddy of mine this Friday for only $40 (untouchable deal) to install it on to test it when it releases.

That's creative

Give it the same codename as Vista had

At my job, this computer I am on uses Windows Server 2003. It looks like Windows XP, just a tad bit different. Im sure Longhorn will be sort of the same as 2003..

Which is EXACTLY why I want to try it: The computer I am posting this on here to this forum on uses Windows Server 2003 SP #1 fully hotfix patched & I like it... imo, it's the BEST Operating System for a PC Microsoft has put out, to date, thusfar.

Same, I'd love to see it's possibilities. The name Longhorn sounds rather wrong though. If the server 2007/8 could be to Vista what 2003 is to XP now it could be rather interesting. A very light DX10 platform.

I might.

I would have got a free licanse for 03 Server if I would have participated in the SP alpha and beta tests. But upon the third call to see what was going on I told them to F off as I didn't have time.

I have the space, and the hardware. If it can will accelerate the database and improve upon my hacked multi user version of XP Pro. More power to them.

Well, I am just finished replying to the secure socket email reply I had to fill out (first on the web, using JavaScript + Cookies enabled (while @ the MS link above), which I never ordinarily do, & then via email to another secure link) so it's done here now!

Hey, it's Microsoft & yes, I trust them to a good extent, so I enabled that stuff for this!

Now, it's "off to the races" ('hurry up & wait' is more like it, lol) to wait for notice of it releasing...

:)

* Steevo: That is actually GOOD news that the possibility of getting this OS release free may come out of it... I truly CAN deal w/ that!

It depends on how deep you are in, and how valuable you are to them. I use the place I work at as leverage to get me some access. A farm of high performance systems by most business standards.

I know a guy at ESPN doing network admin, same thing as me, and he has access to about the same number of systems, but with less priviages to do things. I run F@H on all the machines that can handle it. It all depends on what you can do.
